'I'm Going to Ignore Them': Adams on Council Members' Letter About Solitary Confinement
Source: NBC NY
Eric Adams says hes the next mayor of New York City whether the also newly-elected council members like it or not.
One the same day the mayor-elect scrapped his inauguration ceremony due to rising COVID-19 cases, Adams had a few choice words bout his colleagues to-be who signed a letter Tuesday criticizing his plans to put violent inmates on Rikers Island into solitary confinement.
Twenty-nine incoming New York City councilmembers said in the letter that solitary confinement is considered a form of torture by the United Nations, human rights organizations and medical experts, adding that evidence shows the method actually causes more violence.
In response to the letter, which was sent to both Adams and reporters, Adams said the councilmembers' desire is to be "disruptive."

Looking like a one-termer.

Either way, Adams won the Primary and clearly won the General Election.

(104 posts)As though only violent offenders get solitary. Go talk to Kalief Browder, oh wait you cannot because he killed himself after 3 years in Rikers and 1 year in solitary.
He was 16 when he got arrested for supposedly stealing a $50 backpack (never went to trial). Eric Adams is exactly who I thought he was.
He is a deformer of progressive police policies. Wait until the next Eric Garner gets killed for no reason by his old mates at NYPD, it is a given which side he will come down on, and it ain't justice for the victim.

(8,122 posts)I'm progressive, let me say that up front. I am a traditional progressive from the FDR, LBJ, McGovern, et al school. I do not believe in overturning and redefining every single term and program used to discuss daily life or Democratic policy.
I respect the need for change and desire of those new to the process to accomplish needed change quickly in light of eminent threats. However I have too often seen the pattern wherein "Four legs good, Two legs bad" becomes the mantra and dogma of the party or leading group within it.
Words and Methods matter. Absolutism leaves no room to negotiate towards a practical result, however important the ultimate goal may be.
I don't know this new mayor, or the new slate of city councilors. I haven't lived in NY for some time. I do recall the Attica rebellion and the ruthless attack which ended it. That hit me nearly as hard as the Kent State Massacre. It cannot be a good thing to have such an avowedly confrontational situation at the beginning of term. It leaves little room for movement or constructive results. So far as I have heard the new mayor is Not in the mold of DJT. He does seem to be certain of his ground as does the new Council.

(7,272 posts)I'll bet he thinks he means well, but the optics of the situation are stark.
And this guy at the least sounds like a classic authoritarian...'It's my way or the highway'.
Kinda like how 'not very good at politically sensitive issues' some politicians sound.
Kinda like how abusive people sound.
Kinda like how dictators sound.
It's a slippery slope.

(5,553 posts)London Breed is already being attacked by people on the left for saying she wants to deal with the shoplifting mobs and clean up open drug use in the Tenderloin, the same for Lori Lightfoot who has asked the ATF to come in to help deal with the illegal guns in her city. In my opinion it is good to see mayors looking out for the victims rather than the criminals.
