LA police kill teen girl while firing shots at male suspect

Source: Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police fatally shot a 14-year-old girl who was inside a clothing store dressing room Thursday as they fired at a suspect who had assaulted a woman earlier, authorities said.

Police also killed the male suspect, authorities said. He and the girl have not been named. The woman who had been assaulted was taken to the hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

The shots were fired around 11:45 a.m. at a Burlington store — part of a chain formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory — in the North Hollywood area of the San Fernando Valley.

Police initially responded to reports of a person being assaulted with a deadly weapon as well as reports of shots being fired, said Los Angeles police Capt. Stacy Spell at a news conference. Spell said officers opened fire when they saw the suspect assaulting another person.

The offending officer should be fired and brought up on manslaughter charges. Reality tells me nothing will happen to that officer and the girl's family won't even receive an apology let alone funeral expenses from the city because of that deadly incompetence. American policing is beyond repair.

and the bastards opened fire in a crowded store rather than try to use something other than lethal force to subdue the guy who was assaulting people. Cretins.

There are shoppers every where and this cop shoots in a crowded store. How dumb can you get. Advanced training is a must. You should not be a police officer without a 4 year degree in criminology. Just saying.

He didn't have a gun though. Why do we pay so much for cops to have armor and helmets and military style gear if they can't mob a guy and overpower him without shooting guns? This sounds like a perfect situation for tasers.

They could have got in between the guy and any civilians, and they could have tasered him, or hit him bean bags, or even tried tackling him.

The way I see it is, that let's say a bunch of firefighters (or any group of people) showed up first for some reason. I'm willing to bet they would have tackled the guy to protect the people. It's as if the police think they only have one tool.
