In a historic first, aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln deploys under command of female captain

Source: Tribune News Service

CORONADO, Calif. — A nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is steaming toward the western Pacific on a routine deployment and, for the first time ever, it’s doing so with a female captain in charge.

For the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, which left its berth at Naval Air Station North Island on Monday morning, the deployment marks the culmination of nine months of training and work-ups. It’s also the first carrier deployment for a Marine Corps F-35C fighter squadron.

The carrier’s deployment to the region comes amid rising hostile rhetoric between China and Taiwan. Rear Adm. Jeffrey Anderson, the Lincoln carrier strike group commander, didn’t comment specifically on the matter during a news conference Monday but said the strike group is ready to accomplish its mission, whatever that might be.

-snip-

Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt, the commanding officer of the Lincoln, said her crew performed exceptionally during deployment work-ups and that she was humbled to be entrusted with their safety.

to actually integrate women into submarine service. What year were women onboard the US Nautilus in an official capacity?

Unless you're on one of the "spacious" boomers, Ohio class SSBNs or SSGNs, less experienced and not yet qualified crew many times end up "hot racking", i.e. sharing the same berth with someone on a different watch. Depends on how many crew are onboard for a particular patrol. Officers and normally first class petty officers and above get to skip that indignity, but it's all part of qualifying. Of all parts of the military, submarine service was the most difficult to integrate gender wise. Simply from the extreme lack of space more than anything else. And heads, i.e. bathrooms. They're few and rather spartan.

made parts for the Nautilus! We were so excited!

Secondly, my sister and I knew where our parents kept a copy of "Knockers up!" in 1960 and played it/ marched around the house to the song when my parents weren't home. We also had a real naughty one by Redd Foxx.

Both fun memories!

Carrier command is the fast track to flag rank. Given the truism that a woman has to work twice as hard as a man to achieve the same thing, well... she must be a real hardass.

…she commands a 100-percent vaccinated crew. This means she’s a good enough leader to cut through all the “religious exemption” and “vaccine refusal” crap to get 5500 sailors to do the right thing.
