Out-of-control rocket stage is tumbling toward Earth

(CNN)Space experts are tracking a Russian rocket part that is set to make an uncontrolled reentry into Earth's atmosphere within the next 24 hours. The Angara-A5 heavy-lift rocket was launched from the Plesetsk spaceport in Russia's northwestern Arkhangelsk region on Monday, December 27. The launch was testing a new upper rocket stage, known as the Persei booster, according to the state-run TAS news agency.
Risk level
While it was highly unlikely that it would cause damage or hurt anyone, "the risk is real and cannot be ignored," he said.
In May 2021, NASA lambasted China for its failure to "meet responsible standards" after debris from an out-of-control rocket used to launch China's space station plunged into the Indian Ocean.
Original intentions
He added that the Russian rocket stage was not intended to reenter the Earth's atmosphere in this way.
"It was meant to end up in an orbit where it would stay for many thousands of years. The rocket failed to restart. The Chinese stage reentry was by DESIGN, they deliberately left it in a low orbit."
He said the rocket stage would reenter between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. ET Wednesday.
Russia's space agency Roscosmos told CNN the launch was operated by the Russian Ministry of Defence, which did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Hmm, I would not put it past Putin to have done that on purpose...where is it supposed to land? If in the Kremlin then OK, no problem.

(6,630 posts)On SATFLARE.com, a forecast created by Joseph Remis suggests the Wednesday afternoon (East Coast time) impact will occur over Australia. However, if the rocket comes in a little faster or slower, due to its tremendous speed, it may end up striking Earth elsewhere along its potential orbital planes. Four such orbital lines extend across the United States at around the time the rocket could hit Earth; the first possible area extends from the San Francisco bay area to the northwestern corner of Nevada north and east across southwest Oregon, west central Idaho, and western Montana. The second extends from near the Los Angeles area in southern California across the middle of Nevada into southeastern Idaho and central Montana. The next path comes up through the middle of Texas into central Oklahoma, central Missouri, near the Iowa/Illinois border, and up across the middle of Wisconsin. The fourth path extends across southeastern Florida, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, southeastern New England, and far eastern Maine. Even if the rocket doesnt strike these areas, debris could light-up the sky and appear as a shooting star or bolide.

the 20-ton blank or what remains of it will smoothly descend for another two or three weeks, until most of it with the remaining fuel burns out in the dense layers of the atmosphere. Where the leftovers will fall is a question.
I hope it hits an ocean.

"At this time, the 18th Space Control Squadron assesses the entry point into the Earth's atmosphere at approximately 2054 UTC (1:54 pm MST) over the Southern Pacific Ocean." That was 3:54 p.m. ET.

This is for something launched last week, the IPM 3/PERSEY. This has to be something other than the doomed rocket.
