But despite Bidens formal nomination of Lipstadt last July, Lipstadt has yet to be confirmed by the Senate.
According to a New York Times report, Lipstadt may be asked to apologize to a Republican senator for a tweet in which she accused him of white supremacy before Republican members of Congress will agree to confirm the noted historian of the Holocaust.
On March 14, 2021, Lipstadt tweeted an article about a statement by Republican Senator Ron Johnson in which he said he would have been more concerned by the events of Jan. 6, 2021 had the rioters been Black Lives Matter and antifa protesters instead of Trump supporters. Lipstadt tweeted the article, saying This is white supremacy/nationalism. Pure and simple.
Other Republican lawmakers have faulted her for appearing in an ad during the 2020 presidential race likening former President Donald Trumps rhetoric to those of the Nazis in the 1930s, before the Holocaust.

(5,722 posts)I don't think she will apologize for pointing out when someone makes a racist statement. Pointing out people's racist statements have been her life's work.

(23,052 posts)I've not had the privilege to meet her, but I've been a Lipstadt "fan" ever since seeing Denial, the movie that was based on her book History on Trial (and subsequently reading the book). I am not reading another book, of hers, Antisemitism: Here and Now, and it's fascinating.
I hope this call for an apology turns our to be a minor bump in the road to her confirmation, because I can't imagine anyone more qualified to serve as the State Departments antisemitism envoy that Lipstadt.

(23,052 posts)I just recently discovered it on Amazon and promptly downloaded it to read on my Kindle app.
I thought the format was weird at first, but the farther I get into the book, the less I notice ir mind it. I haven't gotten very far yet, but I've already learned some new things, like how the term "antisemitism" originated, and the fact there have been disagreements about to spell and punctuate it. (I knew it was based on the term for the Semitic family of languages, but nothing beyond that.)
I absolutely love it when an author can make me see all kinds of new angles to a topic I thought I was already familiar with, and she's doing that on practically every page so far.
