President Barack Obama Targeted By Anonymous Hate Text Messages

Posted: 10/30/2012 9:57 pm EDT Updated: 10/30/2012 10:16 pm EDT

WASHINGTON -- A sting of vitriol-laden text messages hit voters' phones Tuesday night, blasting President Barack Obama with anti-gay attacks and false claims.

In what appeared to be a coordinated campaign of cell phone text mail or text messages, one Virginia voter received one from the address sms@votegopett.com that made the inflammatory claim: "Obama supports homosexuality and its radical social agenda. Say No to Obama on Nov 6!"

New York Times reporter Jonathan Weisman tweeted that his 13-year-old daughter also got a text. "Obama denies protection to babies who survive abortions. Obama is just wrong,"; said the message from sms@gopmessage.com. HuffPost's Sam Stein also got a message, declaring"Seniors cant afford to have 4 more years of Obama budget cuts to Medicare."

Some of the messages did not seem well-targeted.

Jennifer Cryer tweeted that she got one from sms@obamaliesett.com that said: "Stop Obama from forcing gay marriage on the states. Your vote is your voice." Cryer used her voice, and answered back, saying "I'm gay, you fucking douchebags."

but this will backfire IMO because most of those who use texting tend to be younger and hopefully more well informed I don't know of many seniors who are into texting,

I use my phone more for texting than for phone calls.

You must when you have a 17 yr. old at home, though.

I assume they just purchased a ton of cell phone #s and sent out this junk. I didn't want to respond and give them the opportunity to capture my information.

Nothing but hate and divisiveness.

I have never seen a nastier Repuke campaign in my 61 years. And that includes Tricky Dick.

Though I would suspect it's with some kind of corporate money behind it. You know, like the Chinese government pays people a few pennies for each pro-government message they post. Republicans sold the country to Red China, one of the greater ironies of the post-war period.

No rational person thinks this will help a campaign: This something a desperate child would do: Cultist behavior.

I thought our phone numbers were anonymous....my husband got one of these anti-Obama hate text messages last night.
But his phone number is a D.C. number (even though he lives in VA). I don't think these texts are random....And I've heard
AT&T is supporting Romney (his provider).
