A tsunami advisory has been issued for the US West Coast and Alaska

Source: ABC News

January 15, 2022, 9:13 AM • 1 min read

The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami advisory is in effect for the entire West Coast and Alaska in the wake of an undersea volcanic eruption near Tonga.

Nearly all coastal areas in California, Oregon, Washington, Southeast Alaska, South Alaska, the Alaskan Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands are under a tsunami advisory. British Columbia is also under advisory.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

ABC News' Daniel Manzo contributed to this report.

Editor's note: This story's headline has been updated to report that a tsunami advisory, not a warning, was issued.

In this circumstance, the tsunami is only dangerous to those in the water, or on the immediate beach -- like swimmers and boaters.
This is definitely a newsworthy post. I'm glad we're not likely to see the destruction and devastation that we've seen in Japan (for example) but there are a lot of people who live near/on the water and waterways or who make their living on the water.

Events like this serve as a reminder that we all live on ONE planet and everything is connected.

I'm a 10 minute drive from the ocean here in Redondo Beach. I'm not sure my neighbors and I would pull through. I just looked it up and I'm 2.6 miles from the beach.

My closest friends live in Long Beach, Laguna Niguel, Venice, and Playa del Rey. I think they're in danger too.

I have several close friends who live in the valley....

I live across the street from the bay in Marin county, California.
We already live in a “flood zone”, so I am concerned.

Keep safe everyone!

I am in Point Richmond now, but I used to live in Mill Valley...when the King Tides hit, sometimes the flooding prevented me from getting to work.

The streets near the Loch Lomond area in San Rafael tend to flood during heavy rain.
The local news has said for Marin, there is still an advisory warning.

Stay safe!

The first waves were supposed to start about 8:30am, and last for 3 hours. We have high tide in about an hour. I live on the entrance to Yaquina bay, so nothing unusual yet, but do see some larger than average white breakers at the bay entrance.

The jetty road to the ocean is blocked off, but lots of surfers and fishermen are lined up eager to get out there.

Here's a webcam (you have to turn off adblockers to view).
