Jill Biden: I didn't expect 'healing role' as first lady

Source: AP

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Her husband campaigned to help unite the country, but Jill Biden says “healing” a nation wounded by a deadly pandemic, natural and other disasters and deep political polarization is among her chief roles as first lady, too.

Wrapping up a year in which she saw herself as a key member of President Joe Biden’s team, the first lady told The Associated Press that she found herself taking on a role that “I didn’t kind of expect, which was like a healing role, because we’ve faced so much as a nation.”

Jill Biden spoke sitting in the sunshine near a swimming pool at a Las Vegas hotel a day after she and the president comforted families in Louisville, Colorado, where a huge swath of homes burned to the ground in a late December wildfire. She hugged people as they stood in front of the charred ruins of their lives and later offered public condolences for dogs and other pets killed in the blaze.

Such trips offer increasingly rare opportunities for the White House to step out of the partisan gridlock that defines Washington. For the most part, Jill Biden isn’t caught up in the capital’s frenzy, giving her the chance instead to serve as something of an ambassador between her husband’s administration and communities across the country, regardless of their political leanings.

if she’s read the new biography of Eleanor Roosevelt. Because this was part of the role she played in FDR’s administration.

I highly recommend the book, Eleanor: a Life, [link:https://smile.amazon.com/Eleanor-Life-David-Michaelis-ebook/dp/B084GB5FCP/ref=sr_1_10?crid=35CUHVTPUKG7H&keywords=eleanor+roosevelt+biography&qid=1642428855&sprefix=Eleanor%2Caps%2C69&sr=8-10|as it’s oddly comforting to realize our country has long had the sort of conflicts we’re having now.

But we have far more of the struggle to remain a democracy now.

And it’s also “Capitol.”

This aspect of her job must be emotionally exhausting. Think about it: there is no situation where a person sees that much human loss on a regular basis.

Covid nurses and docs do, but that is one type. This is fires, tornadoes, violence; a variety of human misery.

due to the drama with the bills Biden is trying to get passed. Looks like it could go either way.

------------

while making coffee, I was mulling this over. If it were last year, with the insurrection, it would make more sense to be capital. However, this year, the drama is all over Manchin and Sinema blocking Biden's major bills. So in context, "Capitol" makes even more sense. I'm assuming Jill is empathetic toward her Joe's goals and long term success.
