Here, kitty: Bidens welcome cat named Willow to White House

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden have finally added the long-promised cat to their pet family.

Her name is Willow, and she's a 2-year-old, green-eyed, gray and white farm cat from Pennsylvania.

"Willow is settling into the White House with her favorite toys, treats, and plenty of room to smell and explore," said Michael LaRosa, the first lady's spokesperson.

Jill Biden had said after Joe Biden was elected in November 2020 that they would bring a kitty to the White House, but her arrival had been delayed. Last month, the White House said the cat would come in January.

If anyone doubts that the arrival of the First Cat is important news of national interest, then they will need to debate that with my cat and her claws.

The Bidens introduced their new cat, a 2-year-old Tabby named Willow, to the world on Friday, January 28, 2022.

They are too often ignored in favor of cute, rambunctious kittens.

Here's hoping she and Commander will form a beautiful friendship that will be the subject of countless adorable photos. I still recall how Buddy and Socks Clinton hated each other from the word go, mostly on the part of Socks, so I'll be thrilled if the two animals get along well.

Here she is, pretending to be a piece of bric-a-brac in my curio cabinet. Don’t worry, she can get out on the side, which is open, whenever she wants. She’s a Manx, ‘stumpy,’ about six months old. Her sister, who I also adopted and named Buffy, is also a black Manx, ‘rumpy.’ She’s not as brave as her sister, so I don’t see as much of her yet.

The kitty in my lap, named Mikey*! What a sweet looking cat! I hope it has many happy years/lives as our First Kitty!

*He goes back to his human today.

I was caring for him while my former landlord was in limbo while her new house was being built. Now that she's moved in, Mikey can go to the new home now. I was really lucky in finding housing before the place was sold so I could care for the kitty, who adopted me when I moved into my apartment there, so that he only had to move twice. She was house-sitting at different places during this seven month odyssey.

Willow resembles a feral male cat that hung out at the apartment about five years ago that my brother and I called Ralph. He actually played with the male Siamese (the one in the photo below) that stayed indoors with us most of the time and he was tame enough that I could pet him. Both cats disappeared about the same time around four years ago when they were approaching their third birthdays. Unfortunately there was enough wildlife around the apartment complex that anything could have attacked them.

But, if they don't, my money's on Willow.

BTW, when I said "House" I meant the House of Representatives, not the White House. When Jordan, Boebert, and the rest get out of hand, just release Willow onto the floor. Cats are good at sensing hostile, bad folks and expressing their dislike for them.

I just mentioned the WH size because it is huge with plenty of places for a young cat to "hide" meaning that I assume someone is handling that 2-year old when the Bidens are on the road, to keep her confined within certain areas.

And I know it all depends on the cat and dog. One of my sisters has an older female tortie (now about 11) and a youngish male black lab (now almost 7) and OMG. It took about 3 years for them to actually remain in the same room - at a distance - because the lab wanted to "play" and the tortie was like WTF? Um no. Then he would drink out of her water bowl and she would eat out his food bowl. It was an absolute riot to watch them whenever I stopped by to visit - especially when they got into the staring matches.

Both do come running to me when I go to visit (I have to "pay toll" (treats) to get past the dog as soon as I walk through the front door).

is a shih tzu down the hall from me. The cat is larger than the dog. A young woman who used to live next door to me had a larger dog, breed unknown. The dog backed off from my cat when she hissed and was afraid to come out the door if my cat was in the hall.

Many years ago, I had a black cat, named Merlin, who acted as chaperone for me when I dated. Guys would fuss over Merlin when they picked me up or took me home, mostly just to score brownie points with me. If Merlin liked them, he would purr. If he didn't like them, he would swat their hands, claws out, when they petted him. More than once I doctored a scratch with antiseptic and a Band-Aid. Merlin's perceptions turned out to be good ones, too.

Perfect companion and "screener". And yes they "sense".

And dogs do too. My sister's dog is friendly to just about everyone (labs tend to be) except for some guy in their neighborhood who goes on a daily jog on their street usually around the time my BIL is walking the dog. And every time they would pass, my BIL would say the dog would suddenly rear up and do a deep growl and get aggressive. Anyone else and his tail is wagging hard enough to knock someone over, just loving the attention.

when we moved into this house, the previous owner had had a problem with mice in the basement. We screened off the windows to keep the cats in (and give the rodents a chance to flee). One of the cats disappeared into the basement and came back up several days later looking rather plump - we never saw a mouse in the house. He would also catch gophers in the back yard and take them off to eat - he did not believe in sharing - which was fine with me!

The cat comes from a dairy farm in Lawrence County, which abuts my county to the north. When Jill Biden was at the farm for an event in 2020, the cat jumped up on stage, then made herself at home when Biden sat down. She got her name from Willow Grove where Jill Biden grew up.
