Judge denies media ban ahead of cop's trial over Taylor raid

Source: Associated Press

By DYLAN LOVAN

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A judge on Thursday denied a request from a Louisville police officer who took part in the deadly raid on Breonna Taylor’s home to bar the media from part of his upcoming trial.

But Jefferson Circuit Judge Ann Bailey Smith ruled that the media can’t bring cameras into the courtroom while individual prospective jurors are questioned ahead of the trial of former Officer Brett Hankison, who was fired months after the March 13, 2020, raid.

Hankison wanted the media kept out of the courtroom during that phase of jury selection, which is set to begin Tuesday in Louisville. His attorney, Stewart Mathews, argued during a hearing this week that having reporters present during that phase could have a “chilling effect” on the prospective jurors being questioned.

Hankison’s motion was opposed by the Kentucky attorney general’s office and three news outlets: The Associated Press, the Courier Journal and WDRB-TV.

And it’s not even for Taylor’s death, just that three of his rounds he fired went into a nearby occupied apartment. He’s charged with three counts of wanton endangerment because there were three occupants in the apartment but thankfully none were injured.

would argue to a jury that the officer is innocent due to the boyfriend shooting first and the odds are slim that everyone on the jury would vote to convict because of that.

One heard them yell or announce police before entering and another claimed they didn’t, so that wasn’t going to help the prosecution.

to smell the judicial stench in this one. MS Taylor was in this world trying to help others, in extremis or otherwise. She's killed by the gangbuster tactics of police raiders. Be dammed if they all die seemed to be their raison d'etre for that raid. Yet irresponsible discharge of weapon only charge. He discharged his weapon for what reason?

It is the south. Where slavery by other names has been practiced mainly in the deep south since post-slavery years. 1866-1941ish. A border state of the old Confederacy. I don't expect justice will be had for MS Taylor.
