Majority wants Biden to consider 'all possible nominees' for SCOTUS: POLL

A new ABC News/Ipsos poll finds that a plurality of Americans view the Supreme Court as motivated by partisanship, while President Joe Biden's campaign trail vow to select a Black woman to fill a high-court vacancy without reviewing all potential candidates evokes a sharply negative reaction from voters.
The ABC News/Ipsos poll, which was conducted by Ipsos in partnership with ABC News using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel, comes days after the most senior member of the Supreme Court, Justice Stephen G. Breyer, announced his retirement at the end of the current term. Breyer's announcement provides Biden the opportunity to change the demographic makeup of the conservative-leaning bench.
During the spring 2020 presidential primaries, days before his set of big wins on Super Tuesday, Biden pledged to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, if elected. Now, with the chance to do so, just over three-quarters of Americans (76%) want Biden to consider "all possible nominees." Just 23% want him to automatically follow through on his history-making commitment that the White House seems keen on seeing through. At a ceremony honoring the retiring justice, Biden told reporters he is able to honor his promise without compromising on quality.
"The person I will nominate will be someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity. And that person will be the first Black woman ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court," Biden said. "It's long overdue in my view. I made that commitment during the campaign for president, and I will keep that commitment."

(989 posts)Biden promises to choose a Black woman and all of a sudden, he needs to consider everyone?
And the fact that members of his own party are of the opinion that it was a mistake for him to project his intentions because it might make the media and the GOP upset...why should we concern ourselves with how they'd react? Let them say what they want and show everyone who they truly are.

(989 posts)Black women have been the Democrats' most loyal voting bloc.
In terms of qualifications, there is a broad and deep pool of Black female talent from which to choose. Anyone making this into a controversy is showing the world what they believe, that Black women are not worthy of holding that position.

(7,403 posts)"All possible nominees" when he selected Clarence Thomas? Thomas probably had the thinnest resume of any Justice not named Carswell that has been nominated in my lifetime. On the other hand, here is what a solid resume looks like.

There are others just as solid but for sure Kruger has a superior resume to Amy B/C,

(9,672 posts)It opened him up to this ridiculous non-starter of media and Republican abuse.
Best should have just nominated the person or persons he wanted on the court and all of them happen to be black women. That would have disallowed this kind of banter at the time of the hearings as well.
Oh well. Can't undo it now.

(12,051 posts)So instead of being bold like so many Democrats expect him to be and daring the media and GOP to come out and show the country who they truly are, the President ought to only say things that should not provoke the racists or cause a nontroversy?

(9,672 posts)Not saying Joe can't fight back against the rhetoric, just sayin' it wasn't necessary.

I think it was Roland Martin who suggested Biden should just chose a candidate without all the "black woman hype". Well, this stupid poll, which wasn't even necessary to conduct, proves his point. By making it about race, it discounts the candidate's deserved qualifications. In Fla, we had the reverse situation. The new nominee for Fla Surgeon General was all about race and obviously didn't check his ethics.

(989 posts)Make no mistake - the people who have subtly or not-so-subtly suggested that Black female judges are somehow inherently inferior to other candidates in education and experience are in the wrong here, not the president.
SouthernDem4ever
(6,617 posts)just a matter of style. The poll doesn't say someone isn't qualified, they are just looking for an excuse to bitch about anything that appears to be biased - unless of course it would have been a republican president making the choice.

(989 posts)Now we have some Democrats agreeing with Biden critics that he never should have telegraphed his intent to pick a Black woman because of the uproar he should have known it'd cause?
Excuse me, but whose fault is it, exactly, that there's a "controversy" in the first place? Not Biden's - it's the fault of the people who have subtly or not-so-subtly expressed their belief that Black women are "lesser" and that by limiting his options to that demographic, he's practicing Affirmative Action.
Save your ire for those people, will you?

(17,047 posts)I am searching for a way to say this that doesn't sound exclusive. I think that people of color and women in particular, have been ignored for most positions typically held by white men. I think there was a lift in the curtain for a very short time in the mid-70s, but the curtain wasn't pulled aside and it dropped right back in place.
When the news about Jusitce Breyer aired last week, I thought 'great, another fight.' Then I realized that I might have to defend a progressive choice once in awhile, because I believe that the outcome makes us a better county. Then I realized that for people of color, there is a struggle every single day. From being chosen for a crap job to being acknowleged as a leader in your field. I'm left thinking that we are living for a day when all qualified candidates are considered, without race or ethnic background being a deal breaker, because their abilities qualify them for consideration of a job at hand. I hope this particular fight leads to more people being woke and I hope that this fight results in a black woman judge sitting on the bench of The Supreme Court of the United States.
