N.Y. Democrats Could Gain 3 House Seats Under Proposed District Lines

Source: New York Times

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Democrats on Sunday proposed a starkly partisan redesign of the state’s congressional map that would be one of the most consequential in the nation, offering the party’s candidates an advantage in 22 of the state's 26 House districts in this fall’s midterm election.

Party leaders in Albany insisted that the redrawn districts were not politically motivated, but the map immediately exposed Democrats to charges that they were engaging in the same kind of gerrymandering that many in the party have denounced as anti-democratic and accused Republicans of carrying out elsewhere.

The proposed lines promise to be a major boon for the party for a decade to come, beginning with a hard-fought national battle with Republicans this year for control of the House of Representatives. With President Biden’s agenda hanging in the balance, Democratic gains in New York could help offset those Republicans expect to rack up in red states like Texas, Florida and Georgia.

“With the stroke of a pen they can gain three seats and eliminate four Republican seats,” said Dave Wasserman, a national elections analyst with the Cook Political Report, who called the proposed lines “an effective gerrymander” by Democrats.

https://www.natlawreview.com/article/ohio-supreme-court-rules-state-legislative-districts-unconstitutional

per national law review

The Ohio Supreme Court struck down the recently adopted state legislative maps in a 4-3 decision announced late this afternoon.

The Court has ordered the Ohio Redistricting Commission to reconvene and adopt new maps. Given the looming election filing deadline of February 2nd, the Court also ordered that the new maps be completed within 10 days and retained jurisdiction over the case for the purpose of review.

The Court sided with plaintiffs when they ruled that the 5 Republican members (and primarily Senate President Huffman and Speaker Bob Cupp) made no attempt to draw maps that complied with Article XI, Section 6(A) & (B) of the Ohio Constitution. The two sections require the maps not be drawn to primarily favor one political party over another and mandate that the maps reflect the statewide preference of Ohio voters over the last 10 years. In their opinion, the Court defined how to determine the appropriate Republican to Democrat percentage siding with Democrats who had argued that only 54% of the districts could lean towards the Republican party.

Interestingly, Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor wrote a separate opinion which begins by concurring to the entire majority opinion. She also reminds the citizens of Ohio that they can again amend the Constitution to move the responsibility of drawing district maps to a nonpartisan, independent body much like what has happened in California, Arizona and Michigan. Given that the Chief Justice agreed entirely with the majority opinion, it does not give map drawers much hope or wiggle room as they attempt to adopt maps which comply with this opinion.

as an resident of Ohio I'm well aware of the issue and should have been more descriptive in my reaction to your post. Yes, it was a positive development that the court ruled 4-3 (DeWine's son refused to recuse himself), but the GQP once again displayed their utter arrogance by failing to bargain in good faith regarding the redrawn maps. Consequently, they refused to negotiate with the Democrats and resubmitted the maps to the SC with only minimal adjustments. While the SC could eject this most recent version, they also may essentially let them go in effect and have the legislature revisit the matter in 4 years. Incidentally, O'Connor (moderate republican politically) is retiring this year and will probably be replaced with someone much more right wing in temperament, especially now that the judicial candidates' political affliction is denoted on the ballot this year for the first time. The GQP rules Ohio with absolute impunity and operate it like an organized crime operation to fatten their personal piggy banks. Despite a litany of massive corruption scandals, they keep getting voted back into office and expanding their dominance. The voting public doesn't seem to mind getting fleeced by the wing nuts and routinely vote against their own economic interest. Sorry to say, Ohio is a lost cause.

gerrymandering, they even sacrifice their own.

NY Republicans thought they were smart when they gerrymandered the senior dean of Republican Congress, Ben Gilman out of office so they could save two new comers. Then tried to knocked out Democrat Maurice Hinchey both served the Hudson Valley w/o the partisan BS. He won even after he was thrown under the bus in a more Republican district. Call it tit for tat I call it helping keep a majority in DC. With all the retirements and no a peep from the DNC or DCCC groups, it going to be tight if people sit it out, and the idiot don't find people to challenge.

Have also been reading many articles about how Democrats are doing quite will in redistricting.

DeWine has been ordered to come up with a fair map or the Court will do it. Considering we voted twice for an unbiased committee. DeWine appointed himself and 4 Republicans. He is not even hiding his cheating now.

JD Vance had his venue cancelled because MTG was going to speak. They had too many complaints. Chip off the old block. He made money but is Trump made over.

We sue them when they do it, they sue us when we do it, rinse repeat. Guess it just matters what court eventually decides it's "fair" or not.
