New York Legislature approves new congressional maps

Source: WABC

ALBANY, New York -- New York's legislature voted Wednesday to pass new congressional district maps that will expand Democrats' influence in New York politics for years to come.

The Senate voted 43-20 on party lines Wednesday to pass the congressional maps. The bill largely passed on party lines in the Assembly with a 103-45 vote. Democrats control 105 seats in the Assembly.

The proposed maps would give the party an advantage in 22 of of the state's 26 congressional districts. Currently, Republicans hold eight of New York's 27 seats in Congress.

The Legislature faces pressure to quickly pass maps, as candidates prepare for petition-gathering season launching March 1. Lawmakers plan to vote on state Assembly and Senate maps Thursday.

Shifts the district from R+11 to D+10. Pretty close to "Safe D"

As long as Republicans can do the shit they’ve done in states like NC, I see no other recourse except that Dems do the same where they can. It’s always seemed crazy to me that there are so many wasted votes in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. We don’t need to win a district in Manhattan by a 90-10 margin. I think they’ve spread those voters out very effectively.

I also feel that Democrats have no choice but to fight fire with fire. Not only have GQPers successfully given themselves extra House seats for years through jerrymandering but the entire damned electoral college system is tilted to the right by essentially giving votes to cattle.

Jerrymander as many Democratic states as we can until the entire system is made fair for all.
