ATMEH, Syria (AP) The leader of the Islamic State group blew himself up along with members of his family as American forces raided his Syria hideout Thursday, the U.S. said the second time in three years the United States has taken out a leader of the violent group that has been struggling for resurgence with deadly attacks in the region.
President Joe Biden announced the overnight raid by American special operations forces, which U.S. officials called a significant blow to the radical militant organization.
The IS group at the height of its power controlled more than 40,000 square miles stretching from Syria to Iraq and ruled over 8 million people. Its attacks in the region included a major assault last month to seize a prison in northeast Syria holding at least 3,000 IS detainees.
The raid targeted Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, who took over as head of the group on Oct. 31, 2019, just days after leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died during a U.S. raid. Al-Qurayshi, unlike his predecessor, was far from a household name, a secretive man who presided over a far diminished version of the group and didnt appear in public.

ATMEH, Syria (AP) -- The leader of the violent Islamic State group was killed Thursday, blowing himself up along with members of his family during an overnight raid carried out by U.S. special operations forces in northwestern Syria, President Joe Biden said.
The raid targeted Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, who took over as head of the militant group on Oct. 31, 2019, just days after leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died during a U.S. raid in the same area. Biden said al-Qurayshi died as al-Baghdadi did, by exploding a bomb that killed himself and members of his family, including women and children, as U.S. forces approached.
The operation came as IS has been trying for a resurgence, with a series of attacks in the region, including an assault late last month to seize a prison in northeast Syria holding at least 3,000 IS detainees, its boldest operation in years.
"Thanks to the bravery of our troops this horrible terrorist leader is no more," Biden said. He said al-Qurayshi had been responsible for the prison strike, as well as genocide against the Yazidi people in Iraq in 2014.

(7,839 posts)Many examples from the historical records
most recently, Afghanistan. Iran, Iraq, etc
.all the places where the Pentagon has soverign right to kill without anyones permission.
Biden only knows what the Pentagon tells him.
But there will be an investigation, by the very same Pentagon, will take months
and then
who cares, right?
Such value for only $$800 billion a year.

(9,981 posts)Headline was civilians, including children, killed in attack. Theyve now changed it, but its just one more example of how media framing is driving negative opinions toward Biden and his administration. Evidently, the media cant wait for Trump to return to power, with his constant tweets and lies driving the news cycle so they make more money. Never mind what he does to the country!

(21,106 posts)But every time I see one of these reports, I ask myself...What if China sent counter-terrorism raids into America to take out a known terrorist? And what if civilians were killed during that attack? Would that be "OK" just because it was a bad person being targeted?

(12,257 posts)Does that make it right or wrong, hard question to answer.
But alas, remember our Kurd allies in Syria? shithole and the GQP gave the ok for Turkey to massacre them and the ones that survived have no country. That in my opinion was totally wrong.

(45,433 posts)because children died.
But US officials claim the ISIS terrorist detonated the explosives to avoid capture. So the children weren't killed by US troops.
