NEW YORK ABC News interviewed Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrichs second wife with whom hes said he has no relationship and is likely to air the segment Thursday on Nightline, an ABC News executive told The Associated Press.
Thats two days before the South Carolina primary, where the former House speaker is trying to topple GOP front-runner Mitt Romney by casting himself as the more conservative option.
The ABC News executive did not indicate what the ex-wife, Marianne Gingrich, said in the interview. The executive spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plans for airing the interview were tentative.
The interview, should it air before Saturdays primary, would shine a spotlight on a part of Gingrichs past that could turn off Republican voters in a state filled with religious and cultural conservatives who may cringe at Gingrichs two divorces and acknowledged infidelity.
The former Ms. Gingrich has famously stated that she could give an interview that would end his career.

(12,041 posts)While people know Romney's name they know little else about him, once the closet opens and the skeletons spill out he is in deep trouble. If Huntsman had been the nominee then Obama might have been in serious trouble, Romney is a much weaker candidate.

This event on ginrich could have been aired long, but now that South Carolina it tightening, they choice to air it before the primary
I suspect it is to insure "their" candidate wins the primary

(4,919 posts)Because, the big miscalculation by establishment Republicans this year has been about the effectiveness of "Occupy Wall Street".
The organic emergence of the "We are the 99% vs. 1%" message has been a gift to the Obama campaign. Mitt is "Mr. 1%" plain and simple.

(2,749 posts)Believe me I enjoy the little reptile's discomfort as much as anyone here, but in the end, so what? He won't be the "R" nominee anyway. I wish someone would find an illegitimate Romney kid out there somewhere. AFTER the primary, of course. That would be something to celebrate.

(2,682 posts)I doubt that the interview will be the smoking gun we all wish for. I'm sure that for a good price (and Newtie has some deep pockets supporting him) she will give the most neutral of answers. And if she didn't, ABC won't air it. Either way, it's not something I've marked on my calendar. Remember the advice of St. Ronnie of Reagan: never bad-mouth a fellow party-member.
