Tennessee's Gov. Lee signs map splitting Nashville

Source: AP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has approved a proposal to split fast-growing Nashville into multiple congressional seats, a move Democrats have warned will unfairly affect Black voters.

The Republican on Sunday also signed off on legislation redrawing election boundaries for the state's Senate and House seat. The governor's office did not issue any public comment about why he signed the maps, but Lee had previously told reporters he saw “no reason” why he wouldn't.

Lee's spokesperson did not immediately return an email request for comment Monday.

Currently, Tennessee’s U.S. House delegation consists of seven Republicans and just two Democrats, whose districts center on Nashville and Memphis.

The only way Republicans win is to rig the game.

This sort of highly politicized gerrymandering is being overturned across America. With any luck, the courts will take congressional redistricting away from the Governor and oversee the work of an unbiased committee to insure fairness for all.

In some states the courts have thrown out maps because the state Constitution prohibits excessively partisan gerrymandering, but not all state Constitutions have that same language.

including mine. We are split 3 ways and represented by multiple state representatives, state senators, & congressmen. The only real state level representation we have is one Democratic state representative (I’m not in that district.)

It is awful. They just redistricted our blue county commission against our will, thus eliminating 3 progressive elected officials who won’t be able to run again until 2024.

I have no problem with splitting counties if it makes sense. These are drawn to specifically eliminate representation form people of color.

The county level argument ignores the fact that grass and livestock don't vote. It is how the Rethugs claim popularity -- we won xx% of counties nationwide while ignoring that the 100+ counties in Wyoming and the 99 counties in Iowa have smaller populations combined than some indibidual counties in dense population states.

This is cheating -- bu tkeeping counties intact is not the solution.

around areas with a very dense population like Dallas/Fort Worth, New York City, etc. But in States where
it could be implemented, IMO it should. It would work in Kansas.

I am sure the Nashville Camber of Commerce endorsed and funded these Retrumplican fascist.

If only there were some type of action the citizens of Nashville could take to cause economic ruin to the businesses that screwed them over...

Nashville elects Democratic mayors as a rule. (I used to live there)

Same with Memphis/Shelby County.

Did they mess with Memphis too? If they did, that is two Democratic seats down the drain unless they can win a lawsuit.

Texas tried to do that to Austin/Travis county too. It knocked out a Dem seat but the one they really wanted to kill was Lloyd Dogget and he is still in Congress.

The State Democratic Party can sue them, and probably will. Maybe whomever won that case in North Carolina will take this on.

The Supremes just ruled to allow a racial gerrymander in Alabama stay in place. They will do the same EVERYWHERE.

It's time for a nationwide General Strike. Hell, it was fucking time for a General Strike on 7 January. Anyone who thought the Retrumplicans would do anything but support the treasonous bastards was kidding themselves.

All the large (Dem) cities have been sliced up like pies. One District I recall stretches from Austin to San Antonio with just enough Red ground to ensure a Republican majority. It's sickening.
