California will lift mask mandate for vaccinated residents in indoor public places next week
Source: San Diego Union-Tribune
SAN FRANCISCO With the Omicron coronavirus surge rapidly receding, California will lift its universal mask mandate for indoor public places next week, state officials announced Monday.
The lifting of the indoor mask mandate statewide will apply to counties without local mask orders of their own, such as San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, as well as swaths of the San Joaquin Valley. Other counties with local mask orders will remain in place, such as in Los Angeles County and much of the San Francisco Bay Area.
While this move doesnt mean face coverings will be a thing of the past they still will be required indoors for unvaccinated residents and for everyone in select settings, such as nursing homes or while aboard public transit relaxing the roughly two-month-old order reflects the progress California has made in its battle against Omicron, even as officials say continued vigilance will be vital in keeping the state on the right track.
Omicron has loosened its hold on California, vaccines for children under 5 are around the corner and access to COVID-19 treatments is improving, said Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, the states public health officer. With things moving in the right direction, we are making responsible modifications to COVID-19 prevention measures, while also continuing to develop a longer-term action plan for the state.

I plan on wearing my mask for a long time to come. The Super Bowl is coming and I want to see what happens. Also, I want to watch what happens next with variants.

(2,800 posts)It seems one's own mask is close enough protection by itself. I think we are going social Darwinism now and letting this run through the Unvaccinated. I hope the variants don't come back to bite us.

GROSS!
I often wonder, how long before the anti-mask movement morphs into some sort of "let's smoke cigarettes everywhere" movement among nasty smokers.

(9,951 posts)... time to watch for pimples and places the razor didn't catch, again... but seriously, I'll stop wearing the mask when I'm ready. I'm going beyond next week.

(9,744 posts)Triple vaccinated is not enough. Idiots abound.
1. The mask covers up an extra day or two that I can skip shaving.
2. There's always the flu to fend off.

(5,293 posts)But I like being alive and (moderately) healthy more.
I liken this pandemic to the movie "28 Weeks Later," a movie a bunch of friends took me to when my wife needed an excuse to get me out of the house so she could work on crafting a present for me. I'd never seen the movie "28 Days Later," so my view was that the movie was summed up as follows
- Run!
- OK, we're safe as long as no one does something stupid.
- (someone does something stupid)
- RUN!!!
- OK, NOW we're safe as long as no one does something else stupid.
- (someone does another stupid thing)
- RUN!!!!!
- (repeat, repeat)
I just cant help feeling we're in the movie "24 Months Later."

(9,744 posts)I am not familiar with that movie. I am a Groundhog Day fan, but that's for another discussion entirely.
I just love that I can finally walk into the bank with a mask on. And nobody cares!!!
Stay safe and healthy. Masks work against the flu.
Being just a little paranoid, I was wiping shopping cart handles and using a gadget to open doors long ago.
I had a couple of N95 masks on hand before the pandemic struck thanks to weed-whacking chores.

(2,244 posts)I think about how in future generations when we're long gone into history, they'll be able to easily pinpoint the 2020-2022 era in photos and video. Not just masks, but things like taped squares on the floor and outside stores. Social distancing signs, etc.

(4,238 posts)outside of SF and LA, hardly anyone wears them. We're in the Central Valley, and yes, while many places may say masks are required, the rule is rarely enforced.
And I'm with Bill Maher on this one It seems some people want the mandate to go on indefinitely. I know some people who probably wear it in the shower. For those who feel safer with it on, more power to you, keep wearing it. But I think it's time we transition back to normalcy. At some point our mental health has to factor in to all of this, and living like hermits, foregoing most social interactions, has also been one of the many downsides these past couple of years.

(7,408 posts)I have to remind myself that other places in the country actually still have restrictions, besides masking when going into a doctors office, nursing home or hospital and some employees at businesses wearing masks youd almost not know COVID was still a thing around here.
