Park outside: Hyundai, Kia recall vehicles due to fire risk

Source: AP

By TOM KRISHER

DETROIT (AP) — Hyundai and Kia are telling the owners of nearly 485,000 vehicles in the U.S. to park them outdoors because they can catch fire even when stopped.

The recalls from the two Korean automakers are another in a long string of fire and engine failure problems that have dogged the companies for the past six years.

This time the problem is contamination in the antilock brake control module that can cause an electrical short.

Affected are certain Kia Sportage SUVs from 2014 through 2016, and the 2016 through 2018 K900 sedan. Recalled Hyundais include certain 2016 through 2018 Santa Fe SUVs, 2017 and 2018 Santa Fe Sports, the 2019 Santa Fe XL and 2014 and 2015 Tucson SUVs.

Thank God for California’s Lemon Law. Cars that can spontaneously combust need to be scrapped.

13. I own both a 2020 KIA Soul and a 2021 Chevy Trax.

I like them both. Just today, the Soul was in the shop for the engine oil ring recall. KIA has replaced engines in Souls and other KIAs that got defective oil control rings during engine manufacturing. The recall involved an engine inspection and installation of software that uses the cars knock sensor to detect the sound the defective rings make internally.

I talked to the service manager today about that recall and asked him how many of the 2020 and 2021 KIA Souls had engine replacements at that dealership. He said, "None, so far. It's very, very rare, and typically doesn't occur until the vehicle has over 50,000 miles." He also said that the software absolutely will detect the sounds made by defective oil rings and light up the check engine light if those sounds appear. "KIA will replace the engine if that happens."

I only drive about 5000 miles per year, so I expect my Soul to carry me around for a long time to come. Right now, it has only 10,000 miles on it.

I only have 1000 miles on my Chevy Trax so far, so it hasn't had time to be anything but a brand new car for me. I bought it in July of this year for use during the winter here, because AWD gives me just a little extra stability here in Minnesota. I'm hoping it proves to be an excellent little car.

Every brand and model of automobile ends up with some recall or another during its lifetime. You take the car in and the dealer takes care of the problem. You just can't worry about that stuff. Just pay attention to recall notices and take the car in if you get one.

2020 and 2021 2.0 liter Souls have a recall for possible bad oil control piston rings.

They keep cranking out the same piece of crap, its all fun and games with the dealers when they seize. I've know some shops, put another used engine in to just get the car back to the owner. Its been going on and on since at least 2007.

6. Bought a KIA a couple of years ago

And my Auto insurance went up.

I called them to find out why. They said it's because KIAs have so many mechanical problems and recalls.

Well I'm stuck with it because it's paid off. Maybe look for a newer car next year.

7. A possible reason why this has NOT BEEN FIXED.. is that the problem is deep within the functioning

of motor in more than one way. It cannot be fixed due to the idea that fixing this would involve removing the motor and
replacing the entire motor. Much too expensive to fix each car.. (possible reason for not solving problem, too costly to solve)

Also.......NOT FIXING AND REPLACING THESE CARS...MEANS ONE THING....AND ONE THING ONLY.. :

............THIS IS A TOTAL S**T COMPANY THAT THEY WOULD SELL A CAR THAT WOULD CATCH FIRE BY ITSELF, and.............
............................NOT FIX THE PROBLEM......... ( just leave the cars outside, cause they can catch fire)

........................THIS PERMENTLY DEFINES THIS COMPANY...FOREVER....

.....................(..Just think about what this means for what the company is all about..and defines itself.)

Oh... ...I forgot:.....Thanks Omaha Steve for posting this...We all need to know about this company....

I vowed I would never buy a car they made as a result. Their business ethics are downright ferangi. They sue their own customers when they are injured by one of their products.

They have the worst capitalist culture, and worst ethical practices, I have ever seen.

But, jimho of course. Personal opinion is not always factual.

14. I have a 2011 Hyundai with over 100,000 miles on it. I love that car.

I have never had a problem with servicing it, recalls that replaced things on it and it runs just fine. It has been a completely reliable car. I park it in a separate building from the house and it looks like a new car.

15. Sounds like they're expanding the recall that was in place for earlier models.

My 2013 has had this recall on it a while now. Initially I just received a heads up notice because the resolution was still TBD. More recently I got a notice to make an appointment.
My '13 Santa Fe has been very reliable (and my mother and sister are happy with theirs also) but customer service has definitely been a mixed bag.
