Governor Hochul lifts vax or mask mandate for NY businesses, keeps it for schools

Source: WABC

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Governor Kathy Hochul announced the end of the indoor mask mandate in New York State effective Thursday, but city and school mandates will remain in place.

The state mandate had required masks to be worn inside businesses where vaccination status was not being checked.

The mandate will remain in effect at homeless shelters, healthcare centers, state-run nursing homes, correctional facilities, schools and day cares.

"We saw it coming, it happened, we hit our peak on January 7, but now we've noticed a 93% drop in cases," Hochul said. "That is exactly what we've been waiting for."

NYC has an existing vaccination requirement for restaurants and bars. Subways and buses are covered by federal DOT mask mandates.

Soon we'll have another variant and getting people to wear masks again will be nearly impossible.

I'll continue to wear mine whenever I'm in a public place.

it our neighborhood, this won't change much. Most people will continue to mask. And my life is in non profits and education, so in those fields, everyone will continue to mask, as well.

Schools are really the hot button issue, and that's been kicked down the pike.
