Russia begins major military exercise that West fears is cover for attacking Ukraine
Source: MSN/Washington Post
Russian forces on Thursday will begin 10 days of military exercises with Belarus, Kyivs Moscow-friendly neighbor, in what Western officials fear could be cover for a renewed invasion of Ukraine.
Top Russian military commanders flew into Belarus on Wednesday for the maneuvers, which involve thousands of troops and sophisticated weapons systems including S-400 surface-to-air missiles, Pantsir air defense systems and Su-35 fighter jets. A day earlier, Russian warships sailed toward the Black Sea for an exercise that puts them within range of Ukraines long southern coastline.
Officials in Moscow and Minsk have said Russian troops will withdraw after the exercises. But U.S. and European security officials are not convinced.
Russian officials, who deny they have plans to attack Ukraine, continue to blame the United States and NATO for driving up tensions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was staging the joint exercises with Belarus to combat unprecedented security threats
the nature and, perhaps, concentration of which are, unfortunately, much larger and much more dangerous than before.

Russian projectionism never ceases to amaze me. They never do anything wrong.

(14,950 posts)Putin and his ilk are peas-in-a-pod with a lot of the movers-and-shakers crafting the American media narrative on this situation. Very very useful thing, this "crisis."

It doesnt have to happen, although Putins Halliburtons are no doubt pushing for it.
I only hope that Putin figures out sooner rather than later, « I do not need this shit, » decides he has made his point, and withdraws.

(4,429 posts)Looks like Im going to have to sell most of my stocks tomorrow and shift into stocks that will be jumping at the first signs of actual conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
1. Oil
2. Precious metals
What else should I buy if WWIII starts within a week or so?
You're joking, right?

(4,347 posts)Putin won't invade Ukraine until the winter Olympics are over, closing ceremonies are on the 20th of February. 10 days of military "exercises" starting today the 10th of February, would end on the same day as the Olympic closing ceremonies. I hope I'm wrong, I never want to see war again.

(1,121 posts)but I expect Putin to move on Ukraine shortly after the Olympics conclude. After investing the effort to amass such a force, I can't imagine it being staged just as a threat to discourage any further consideration of Ukraine joining NATO. He wants the country back so he can't install another puppet government that's beholden to him.

(4,347 posts)What you don't understand is that Ukraine is in no way a threat to Russia concerning NATO membership. This is because NATO does not accept countries embroiled in an active war. As such, Putin himself guaranteed no NATO membership for Ukraine by invading and continuing the war in Crimea and Donbas. He invades again it's pure malice toward Ukrainians.

(3,334 posts)There were many talks between Gorbachev and Secretary of State Baker about NATO would not expand to the East if Germany was allowed to reunify. It never became to be. Russia does not have any reason to trust NATO, and NATO does not have any reason to trust Russia.

For the rest of Eastern Europe, it was not written down in contract form. But that clear understanding is in all of their discussions:
Secretary of State James Baker: We agree with that.

(24,688 posts)what is striking is that in the last election he threatened Google and Apple, where-by the opposition party could have voted using there platforms to vote for Navalny's supporters and he blackmailed them to shut down the app, and now look where the world is....a very small man with nuclear weapons blackmailing everyone that comes across him.... and since he is doing this I still think there is link as to why he is doing this, so that he can in some ways deflect and provide cover for the asshole living in Mar A Lago , since they are joined at the hip, and have been for some time.....just my rant...

(6,265 posts)here in America has the same problem. Blame everyone else while looting the treasury or as in Putin's case taking over another country. All have been so transparent. If the fascists don't win this current war to take over the world, history will not be kind to these dangerous puppets and puppet masters. Perpetrators of much chaos and death.
