Luc Montagnier, co-discoverer of HIV, dies aged 89

Luc Montagnier, the French virologist credited as a co-discoverer of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), has died aged 89.

Montagnier was jointly awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize for his work in isolating the virus that causes Aids.

He was lauded for this work, but later criticised for unscientific claims about autism and Covid-19.

Local news site FranceSoir reported he died on Tuesday in Neuilly-sur-Seine "surrounded by his children".

The virologist first began working on the virus in the early 1980s while at France's Pasteur Institute, a non-profit research foundation.

1. good riddance to conspiracy theorist trash

Pushed the ADE conspiracy theory. Pushed the lab leak conspiracy theory. Pushed the "human made HIV strains in COVID" conspiracy theory. Probably pushed other junk I'm not even aware of.

Guy started well but died with the scientific intellect of a teenage troll on 4chan. Probably stole most of his ideas from female coworkers.

Just makes you appreciate even more the true scientists at Pfizer, Moderna, and the CDC, and the accredited journalists who got us through the first phase of this disaster.
