Kemp urges Georgia lawmakers to address mask mandates in schools

Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday revealed details about legislation he backs to bring an end to mask requirements in Georgia schools.

Kemp said it’s time that parents decide whether to send their kids to school wearing them, as the COVID-19 pandemic approaches the end of a second year of disrupting schools in the state.

“This isn’t going to just end and be gone forever,” he said. “We’re going to have to deal with this but we’ve got tools to deal with it now. This isn’t saying that parents can’t make the decision to mask their kids. It’s just giving parents an opt out.”

About a quarter of the state’s 180 school districts still require masks, including several in metro Atlanta. Under Kemp’s plan, no school system could mandate masks without allowing parents to opt out.

for mask mandates. You know that the first time a student dies from COVID their parents are going to sue everyone in sight -- especially teachers -- for not keeping their child safe. God forbid the parents take responsibility for their own actions.

A law prohibiting school mandates without protection for educators might just as well be entitled, "The Lawyers' Full Employment Act." If I were a teacher there's no way I'd set foot inside a classroom without such a legal shield in place.

My child wears a mask to school everyday He was in virtual school from March 2020 to August 2021. He returned to school this past August because he was fully vaccinated.

Our Georgia school district has a mask mandate, but my double masked and vaccinated child still contracted COVID19 because so few 12-17 year olds are vaccinated, due to Kemp's campaign of COVID disinformation and refusal to follow the damned science.

My child has asthma, so he got the monoclonal antibody treatment, which was very painful series of 4 large shots in his arms and stomach. He got better, but missed almost two weeks of school. There was no virtual school anymore, so he missed all.of the classes and it was hard to keep up with his classes, especially accelerated math.

His father and I missed 10 days of work without pay.(The state organization that I work for doesn't provide benefits to hourly employees.) We had to all isolate in different rooms in our home. Thankfully, we didn't get COVID from our child, who has since fully recovered.

The whole ordeal was difficult due to loss of wages and schooling, not to mention worry and stress for us and a scary and painful experience for my child.

Premature, no action yet. Finale result might be LBN.
