Manchin clarifies: He'd oppose second high court nominee right before presidential election
Source: The Hill
Centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Monday said he would not support confirming another nominee selected by President Biden for the Supreme Court immediately before the 2024 presidential election, clarifying remarks he'd made earlier about the midterm elections.
Manchin said he would prefer to wait until the country knows who will occupy the White House in 2025.
Manchin walked back the comment he made earlier afternoon indicating that he would not support confirming a second Biden nominee to the Supreme Court if another vacancy occurs shortly before the Nov. 8 midterm election.
Asked if the Senate should act if another seat becomes vacant "later in the year closer to the election," Manchin responded: "I'm not going to be hypocritical on that.

Never trust a republican

Cant have authoritarianism/ conservatism mixed in your democracy... If you really believe in democracy.

He will probably run as a Republican the next election.

(9,953 posts)... it sounds like he's being fair and consistent... I assume he voted NO on Amy C Barrett... Personally, I think Democrats should stop being "fair" on these points. Republicans have no hesitation about being UNFAIR, so it just puts Democrats at a disadvantage.

Here's the link to the roll call for Barrett.

(9,953 posts)... that seemed like what he was talking about. Republicans take advantage of people who "play fair." They have little hesitation about fairness.

Seems like every time we need all our Dems in lockstep, together, HE'S the one who wanders off the path.

(81,220 posts)Make both Manchin AND Sinema irrelevant. So we don't give a damn how they vote.
I think Manchin's probably getting off on being "king for a day." Let's elect more Dems to the Senate, and take his power position away.

(14,570 posts)I have difficulty thinking of him as a Democrat after all the shenanigans he has pulled.
It reminds me of the old joke about the parts of the body arguing about who should be in charge.
The brain said it should, because it does all the thinking. The heart said it should because it pumped the blood. The stomach said it should because it dissolved the food so it could nourish the body. The liver said it should because it cleaned the blood, and the veins said they should because they were conduits for carrying oxygen to all the cells.
Finally, the asshole spoke up. It said it should be in charge. The other body parts laughed so hard the asshole closed up tight. Poison built up, and the body got sick. Finally it got so bad, all the parts of the body agreed out of desperation that the asshole could be in charge.
Well...it doesn't quite fit. He sure does seem to want to be in charge, though. Problem is, no one is laughing.
He singlehandedly kept the administration from lowering the age of eligibility for Medicare. I will never forgive him for that shit, and I will be sending money in steady amounts to any primary opponent that goes after him. He can take his houseboat, his coal money, and the money he gets from big pharma and put it all where the sun don't shine.
