Products sold at Family Dollar locations in Alabama and regulated by the FDA may be contaminated after a rodent infestation and other unsanitary conditions were discovered at one of the companys distribution facilities in Arkansas, the agency announced Friday.
FDA-regulated products sold at several Family Dollar locations in Alabama and five other states -- Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee -- may be unsafe to use following an FDA inspection at the companys distribution facility in West Memphis, Ark., uncovered live rodents, dead rodents in various states of decay, rodent feces and urine, evidence of gnawing and nesting and rodent odors throughout the facility among other unsanitary conditions, the FDA announced.
Families rely on stores like Family Dollar for products such as food and medicine. They deserve products that are safe, said FDA Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs Judith McMeekin in a statement. No one should be subjected to products stored in the kind of unacceptable conditions that we found in this Family Dollar distribution facility. These conditions appear to be violations of federal law that could put families health at risk. We will continue to work to protect consumers.
The inspection also turned up dead birds and bird droppings, and products stored in conditions that did not protect against contamination, according to the agency.
