Biden and Putin agree in principle to Ukraine summit- French presidency

Feb 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden and Russia's Vladimir Putin have agreed in principle to hold a summit on the Ukraine crisis, the office of French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday.

"The substance will have to be prepared by (U.S.) Secretary Blinken and (Russian Foreign) Minister Lavrov during their meeting on Thursday 24 February," the Elysee palace said.

"It can only be held at the condition that Russia does not invade Ukraine."

Macron will help prepare the contents of the discussions, the statement added.

Putin is performing his own version of saber rattling, and he expects that "the west" will be paying very close attention, as is appropriate. But IMO, Putin has way too much to lose by invading, in the short and long term. Even now, he's likely losing millions of dollars a day just maintaining ground forces in late February. Playing soldier games is expensive. If he invades, Russia will be decimated economically, its people will not be happy, and Putin will be looking over his shoulder. Does he want to take these risks? For what? A return to the USSR "Glory Years"?
