Idaho passes bill prohibiting so-called 'ballot harvesting'

Source: The Hill

The Idaho state House on Monday passed a bill to make it illegal for neighbors to deliver one another's voting ballots to the post office.

Idaho Rep. Mike Moyle (R) led the effort in order to prevent so-called "ballot harvesting" and "to make it clear that we don't like cheaters," according to The Associated Press.

Under the bill, which passed 53-15, delivering 10 or more ballots to the post office for other people would be a felony, and delivering fewer than 10 would be a misdemeanor.

-snip-

But critics say the bill criminalizes neighbors making an effort to help one another with good deeds. Some also say it could be a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act by preventing some groups, including disabled people and those who may need the help of health care workers to vote, from casting their ballots, the wire service added.

But remember - this is the House. This bill still needs to pass the Senate and be signed into law by the Governor. There is still hope that we will not go down this path. Frankly, considering the population is vastly right wing, I don’t know exactly what they are afraid of…

Sorry grandma you have to take your ballot to the post office yourself even though it’s nearly impossible for you walk because your arthritis has gotten so bad, or you had a stroke and can no longer drive. What idiots these people in republican state houses.

So that could split the right wing vote. Technically that could help us.

Why would voters voting by mail need to go to the post office? From what I could find they could put it in their own mail box.

My wife has been under a doctor's stay-at-home order since a few months before COVID was first identified in China because she has trouble breathing.

Many days she's not physically able to walk to the mail box.

I suppose I might steal her ballot if I carry it to the mailbox for her but that's kind of a low probability event, don't you think?

Even the NC one that was a big deal 4 years ago, where a (R) was found guilty of ballot harvesting contrary to NC state law. At least I think it was 2018. Maybe 2016.

In this case, https://idahocapitalsun.com/2022/02/21/idaho-house-passes-bill-making-some-ballot-collection-practices-a-crime/

The bill text states the law does not apply to election officials, U.S. Postal Service or other parcel delivery workers, a member of the same household or someone who is related to the voter by blood, adoption or marriage. But even those individuals are not permitted to collect more than six ballots at a time, and if anyone is found to have collected more than 10 ballots, they could be charged with a felony.
