UNITED NATIONS (AP) Russian President Vladimir Putin received no support from members of the U.N. Security Council at an emergency meeting Monday night for his actions to bring separatists in eastern Ukraine under Moscows control.
The U.S. called his moves a pretext for a further invasion, many members condemned his violation of Ukraines territorial integrity, and even close ally China urged diplomacy and a peaceful solution.
Ukraine called for the rare evening session along with the U.S., five European countries and Mexico to condemn Putins actions earlier Monday to recognize the independence of the separatist regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, scenes of an eight-year war, and order his military to maintain peace there.
Russia happens to hold the Security Councils rotating presidency this month and wanted the meeting to be closed, but diplomats said they agreed to an open session under intense pressure from Western and other members.

(62,521 posts)a chunk of the world gets all hot and bothered, making all sorts of condemnations and imposing whatever sanctions, but, at the end of the day, putin still is occupying that territory.

(12,369 posts)which will happen if the US and Russia got into it?
Why not adopt a wait and see as to what Pres. Biden and the rest of the western world does?
This is not the Mango Menace at the helm now, this is a President who knows the stakes and is marshalling the western world and NATO to confront Russian aggression without blowing up the world.
I fully trust Pres. Biden, who has reunited NATO and the western world, unlike the Mango Menace, who probably would have just stood by and let Putin run wild without any consequences.

(62,521 posts)you know they only thing that will dislodge putin from Ukraine is force or the collapse of russia.
so there is my answer.
on edit. he will not leave willingly. he needs to be forced to.
the sanctions need to be crushingly horrible to the russian economy, but I honestly don't see that happening.

(4,346 posts)it is Afghanistan times 10....
We should give them all the aid we can, other than committing US troops on the ground into Ukraine...
I think the Russians are biting off more than they can chew, and have forgotten the lessons of Afghanistan...

(1,846 posts)Russia is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Otherwise the UN might be good for something.
