Whitmer signs bills into Michigan law to cut prescription costs, increase accountability

Pharmacists cannot hide cheaper medication prices from consumers and the state has more power to regulate people who set key drug policies for pharmacies under bills Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed into law on Wednesday.

The bipartisan legislation is intended to cut prescription costs while increasing transparency and accountability for pharmacy benefit managers, entities that help establish drug reimbursement rates and frequently have the power to influence which medications end up being distributed by pharmacies across the state.

“For too long, unlicensed pharmacy benefit managers have been able to engage in practices that drive up costs for Michiganders whose lives and health depend on critical prescription drugs like insulin," Whitmer said in a statement,

"This bill brings much-needed transparency to our healthcare system and is a testament to what we can do when we put Michiganders first. I am grateful for the work of my Prescription Drug Task Force for their recommendations and our legislative partners who joined with us to get this done.”
