Multiple reports are now quoting Ukrainian officials as saying troops in Belarus are joining the Russian attack, meaning the offensive is now also coming from Ukraine's north.
Belarus, which is on Ukraine's northern border, has long been allied with Russia. Analysts describe the small country as Russia's "client state".
The attack from the north adds to Russia's attacks on Ukraine's east, and Russian troop movement on Odessa in the south.

(111,222 posts)Confronting the Russian army head on would only get most of them killed. My best guess says that the war itself will be short, that Putin will get his parade, but that their reach will exceed their grasp. Having taken it, they will find it costly to keep it.
Fighting a guerilla war would make a great deal of sense.
Don't forget they've been fighting back against a gang of Russian hardliners and fast buck guys for 8 years already.
Word on the street in Ukraine (via RFI, which I'm listening to right now) is that Putin has lost the plot, he's gone completely bonkers, and they're terrified of his irrationality. I'm not so sure about that. He prides himself on being a student of history (even though he's rewritten the last 8 years of it) and I think he's all too aware of Russia's history during the last world war and will stop short of that.
I hope.

(2,014 posts)at the very least going to set a line from Kyiv to Crimea along the Dinpro to divide Ukraine east and west initially. Western Ukraine is vast fields with little defense.

Missiles hit several military facilities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro cities. A Russian landing party landed in Odesa, and Russian troops crossed the border near Kharkiv.
