Ukrainian military claimed that they have shot down five Russian jets and helicopters in the eastern region, as Russian troops moved into the neighbouring country's territories. "The combined forces give a worthy rebuff to the armed forces of the Russian Federation. Military units in their positions. The enemy suffers losses," the Ukrainian military claimed.

And oh, I think the Ukrainians are staying as calm as can be expected considering the circumstances. And they are fighting back!

who is power tripping over his id.
on edit; I am not implying anything. I'm upset about the death and destruction that is happening and what's to come.
If others want to cheer, I get that. I just can't. It's tragic all around but I want most definitely want Ukraine to be victorious.

(20,248 posts)I read recently what notable figures of our Faith had to say regarding having to defend against enemies that initiate actions that have killing as motive/intention. And it's permissible only as defense. I'll try to find what I read.
What. Should the Ukrainian people just throw their hands up in surrender?

(9,069 posts)I'm extremely upset that men, women and children are going to get killed because of some asshole who needs to flex his bravado.
Therefore I find it hard to "cheer" at this moment.
I'm thinking of the death and destruction.

(20,248 posts)and are assuming a defensive stance.
I hate what's happening. Yes, there will be bloodshed, injuries and fatalities. This unwarranted aggression must be countered and met strongly by any means necessary. Who let putin slide? Who cares. The history is gone. Now is the moment.

(5,397 posts)But his recent televised rants tell me otherwise.
He sincerely believes the history of Russia includes a lot of the territory around Russia and that they belong to Russia.
His convoluted thinking allows him to believe he is 'protecting' downtrodden Russian citizens in the Ukraine.
Most citizens in Ukraine speak both languages, so that argument falls flat.
The truth is that historically and culturally Ukraine was the heart of Russia a long time ago, and what is now Russia just an offshoot from that. Eastwards population expansion.
So does the Ukraine belong to Russia, or does Russia belong to the Ukraine?
With his strong man stance and rhetoric, Putin in unable to back down, even if he wanted.
He would appear weak and caving in to global criticisms if he withdrew his troops.
So an invasion was inevitable. And it looks like it's going to get violent.
What is the solution? Should NATO countries supply Ukraine with unlimited weapons and 'adviser' soldiers so it becomes a war of attrition, last one standing wins?
I'm hoping for a backlash against all this from Russian citizens.
There will be, if conflict carries on for too long. But will Putin listen?

(12,536 posts)Yes, Russia blocks a lot just like China, but the Russian people are more resourceful than the Chinese I think

There are many ways around the Chinese firewall.
Please don't insult the character of the Chinese people. They are some of the most resourceful people I've ever lived around.

Certainly some still will do it, but the Russians aren't as controlled & locked down as the Chinese. They welded people into buildings during covid!

Again, as I say, what do I know about China. I only lived there for 12 years and will be going back to reunite with my wife in May.
Pornography is also illegal and I've seen people selling it outside of police stations in makeshift stores.
Swinging is illegal over there too, but there is a website in China where couples can find and do that. . .my wife and I looked at it for a giggle one night when she asked about "open relationships" when she read something on some Hollywood "news" website.
