While War In Ukraine Rages Below, Astronauts Cooperate Above
Source: Forbes
The 1984 movie 2010 features American and Russian astronauts working together on a space mission, but when tensions between the two countries on Earth simmer to a boiling point, the governments order the crews to separate.
Former American astronaut Gregory Chamitoff recalls watching the movie with Russian cosmonauts Sergei Volkov and Oleg Konoenko while the three served on the International Space Station together in 2008. As soon as it came up, I said, You guys get back on your own side! he recalls joking.
It was a humorous moment that right now seems oddly relevant. The world is on edge with Russias invasion of Ukraine, while at the same time, four U.S. astronauts and a European are living and working with two Russian cosmonauts 250 miles above the conflict zone. This isnt the first time that astronauts and cosmonauts have been on the station together while geopolitical tensions festered below. Crews aboard the station have lived through several Earthbound crises since expeditions began in October 2000, and according to the astronauts who spoke with Forbes, astronauts have always continued to cooperate.
Chamitoff, for example, was on the station with Volkov and Konoenko when Russia clashed with neighboring Georgia over the South Ossetia region. We talked about it, he says. And they explained to me their perspective on what was happening from their understanding of the relationship between Russia and Georgia.

(22,777 posts)didn't want this anymore than we, the Ukrainians or the rest of the world did. Furthermore, the ISS has been the symbol of peaceful cooperation for more than two decades.
So, I completely disagree with you. Your attitude says you didn't really read or comprehend the article, and aren't slightly familiar with or even care about the ISS and its missions.
Just sayin'.

(22,777 posts)This is where we are and the majority of the Russian people do not side with him anymore than most of us sided with GWB when he attacked Iraq. No difference except they're all in more danger than we would be for speaking out. So, stop smearing them.

(21,834 posts)Their civilians. Their military. Their oligarchs. ALL OF THEM. Stop sticking up for the invaders. It isn't just Putin and his merry band of thugs invading Ukraine. SEEMS THERES 200K RUSSIANS INVADING UKRAINE. Dear god. Ugh.

(22,777 posts)So you can just fuck right off with that shit. You think we have or could be looking at improper elections here in the future because of the republicans, Putin is way ahead of them on corrupting what they have for a system of elections.

(21,834 posts)You're absolutely correct. There are some even supposedly on our side who have the same hearts and minds as the war mongers without any vision for peace or concern for all of the people involved.

(21,834 posts)Huh? Huh? Did I?
How about the nearly 200K Russians in Ukraine committing untold atrocities? Would you give them a fucking medal? You're goddamn right the Ukrainians should kill every Russian combatant on their soil who does not leave or surrender.
Polybius
(21,630 posts)No one in this thread has sided with you, so that should tell you something. You should delete it and apologize. You said that you wanted to kill Russian cosmonauts simply for being born in the wrong country.

(21,834 posts)A half joke posted in anger, BUT, since a couple of you decided to get on your moral high horses about it, I left it up. All the while, nearly 200K of the "Russian people" continue to kill innocent Ukrainians. So I think I'll leave it, thank you very goddamn much.
