Paul Ryan praises Biden's SCOTUS pick: 'Incredibly happy for Ketanji'
Source: The Hill
Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R) on Friday praised President Biden's nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson, a federal appeals judge in Washington, D.C., to the Supreme Court.
"Janna and I are incredibly happy for Ketanji and her entire family. Our politics may differ, but my praise for Ketanji's intellect, for her character, and for her integrity, is unequivocal," Ryan said in a tweet.
His comment is similar to the one he used to introduce her for her first federal judgeship in 2012.
Ryan's sister-in-law is married to Jackson's brother-in-law.

(22,590 posts)Ryan got the hell out of Dodge at warp speed when he realized he would have to deal with Trump if he remained Speaker. I imagine the Trumpsters saw that as a slap in their dear leader's mango-complected face.

"Those who sit on the Supreme Court play a vital role in our democracy: They interpret the law and act as the final arbiter of the U.S. Constitution-even against the other branches of government. Adherence to the text of laws and the words of the Constitution serves as the check on this extraordinary power. President Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh shows his commitment to selecting judges who are themselves committed to this restraint. Judge Kavanaugh will bring extensive experience to the Supreme Court; his long career exemplifies public service and, in particular, dedication to religious liberty. He has shown that Constitutional principles are the ultimate quide for his opinions. I look forward to Judge Kavanaugh's swift confirmation in the Senate. This is an excellent choice.

(69,851 posts)How Paul Ryan is related to Ketanji Brown Jackson
The former House speaker has a distant family connection to the Supreme Court nominee.

With the historic nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court comes a Washington version of Six Degrees of Separation: Jackson is related, by marriage, to former House speaker Paul Ryan.
Weird, huh? There are the obvious differences: Jackson is nominated by a Democratic president; Ryans entire career has been in Republican politics. Shes a woman; hes not. Shes Black; hes White. And yes, we wish we could have been at a Thanksgiving dinner to hear the two discuss well, anything. But its fair to say they like and respect each other.
Our politics may differ, but my praise for Ketanjis intellect, for her character, for her integrity, it is unequivocal, said Ryan at Jacksons 2012 hearing for her nomination as a U.S. District Court judge. (Last year, she was confirmed to the prestigious D.C. federal court of appeals.) Shes an amazing person, and I favorably recommend her consideration.
On Twitter Friday, Ryan echoed that first comment, and also stated, Janna [Ryans wife] and I are incredibly happy for Ketanji and her entire family.

(8,452 posts)Maher, who I am not a huge fan of these days, had a great comment about how Republicans moderate their views when it hits close to home. Cheney on gay rights, Jeb Bush on drugs, etc.
That's the case here, Ryan knows this women and knows she is very qualified.
That's the problem we have, the cities, while being mostly Democratic still have a strong contingent of Republican voters there, but the rural areas that tend to be more red are almost always exclusively right wing and the few Liberals that do live there never speak up. That homogenous and monolithic culture breeds complete obedience to your political dogma. And as the years of propaganda get pumped into these areas to exploit these views, people tend to become more radicalized.
