Russian ransomware gang threatens countries that punish Moscow for Ukraine invasion

Source: Politico

A Russian ransomware gang on Friday threatened to hack the critical infrastructure of any nation or organization that retaliates against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, according to a statement shared by cybersecurity researchers.

The statement, attributed to the operators of the Conti gang, pledged “full support of [the] Russian government” and vowed to use “all possible resources to strike back at the critical [infrastructure] of an enemy” that launches “a cyberattack or any war activities against Russia.”

The group is best known for devastating Ireland’s health system in May 2021, an attack whose real-world effects persisted for months.

POLITICO has been unable to independently verify the authenticity of the message, but researchers who track Conti and other ransomware groups consider it to be legitimate.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee designed the Internet without any way to censor or cut it off. Not sure what may have happened since then, but it's my understanding it wouldn't be easy.

They might be free-lancers but they're taking orders from the top guy. Otherwise they wouldn't be so vocal about this.

My computer was hit 7 years ago. Took me several hours to get the ransomware removed.

Make sure to back up your files regularly.

a result of visiting too many "bad neighborhoods"... it happened more than once, some years back

I was able to circumvent it by restarting the computer "in safe mode", and then running Malwarebytes, an anti-malware program.

In extreme circumstances, one could reset the computer to "factory mode", but you would lose all your saved information...

Nowadays, anything I want to save is on outboard hard-drives, but I haven't run into the problem in a long time. Like I said, it was "primitive ransomware", which mostly functioned via a screen that would cover everything else up.... but not truly take over the computer, only what showed on the monitor-- (and made the usual demands and threats, "send money via whatever", or "send money or the FBI will arrest you" or some such rot. My impression was that such malware seemed to be targeted against new citizens or the otherwise ignorant...
