62 percent of voters say Putin wouldn't have invaded Ukraine if Trump were president: poll

A new Harvard Center for American Political Studies (CAPS)-Harris Poll survey released Friday found that 62 percent of those polled believed Putin would not be moving against Ukraine if Trump had been president. When looking strictly at the answers of Democrats and Republicans, 85 percent of Republicans and 38 percent of Democrats answered this way.
However, 38 percent of all Americans polled believed that Putin would have invaded Ukraine even if Trump had been president.
A majority of Americans polled 59 percent also said they believed that the Russian president moved on Ukraine because Putin saw weakness in President Biden, while 41 percent said that it was not a factor in Putins decision to invade Ukraine.

(4,298 posts)in 2024. Miscalculation of the century no matter the outcome. Putin looks deranged, sick, and sociopathic. Biden looks stronger than ever and so does NATO. Trump look crazier than ever and since he was already at rock bottom mentally no where to go. Xi eating popcorn and KIM throwing a temper tantrum because no one is paying attention to him right now. Ukrainians showing the world how to face a bully no matter what and inspiring some developing nations to deal with their own demonic leaders.
Yeah, we are all going to suffer in varying degrees but the bullies will be suffering more in the long run.

(21,600 posts)Since Reagan's electorally-timed Grenada escapade in 1983, Repug presidents have devoted themselves to cultivating a public image as being "tough and strong" on foreign policy (and everything else).
And in the eyes of many voters, that's simply meant invading and bombing - as if that was what defined strength.
So it's little wonder so many of them now see Putin's war sympathetically.

"The survey is an online sample drawn from the Harris Panel and weighted to reflect known demographics. As a representative online sample, it does not report a probability confidence interval."

(26,044 posts)However, a separate Morning Consult survey conducted Thursday the only poll asking about Ukraine conducted entirely since Russias invasion so far told a different tale. In it, registered voters gave Biden a positive net approval rating on his handling of foreign policy in Ukraine and Eastern Europe: 48 percent to 43 percent. This could reflect what will happen to Bidens approval ratings on Ukraine (and perhaps overall) once the public hears more about the crisis and has new information on which to base their opinions such as Bidens televised announcement on Thursday that he would impose harsh economic sanctions on Russia and not send U.S. troops to Ukraine. As my colleague Geoffrey Skelley wrote at the time, both of those positions are popular among the public.

(92,061 posts)The fact that 38% of the Democrats answered this way is very suspicious
The other fact is it is an online sample draw which does not report a probability confidence

...remember, trump just called putin a genius, smart and said the invasion although wouldn't have happened under him was wonderful...
...it's not whether putin would have invaded under trump but what would Europe look like today and tomorrow under the tump/putin friendship...
...we and Europe should be grateful that Joe is President...

This isnt LBN, this is as an unreliable poll the way it was done, and of course it s from the Hill
What also is interesting is some have a pattern to go out of their way to find as many negative, demoralizing links, whether they have validity or not, as though this is how they get their jollies

(92,061 posts)Add to that, that it says 38% of the Democrats answered this way, that putin would not have invaded Ukraine if trump was still president.
Being charitable, the least one would say it was an outlier, but most likely it isn't even a valid poll the way it was done

(6,617 posts)not the poll necessarily, but the minsinfo from the brains they polled. (50,528 posts)25 percent believe Putin would not have invaded because Trump is a strong and persuasive world leader.
50 percent believe Trump would have handed the Ukraine to Russia so there would have been no need to invade.
and
25 percent believe Trump talked Putin into invading the Ukraine so Joe Biden would look like a weak and indecisive leader, therefore making it easier to beat him in a 2024 rematch.

(7,275 posts)It would have been because Trump would have abused US powers to force regime change in Ukraine according to Putin's instructions. No invasion would have been necessary, since it'd've been a bloodless coup.
Happy Hoosier
(7,216 posts)Under Trump, Ukraine's defense was undermined and Trump had swept teh State Department of officials who were opposing Putin;s efforts to undermine Ukraine's political system.
Putin was effectively "Belarusing" Ukraine until Trump lost. Had Trump won, there would be no need for Putin to invade. He would have rat-fucked the Ukrainian political system and installed his own stooge. Again. Biden winning fucked that plan up. And with Ukraine headed to NATO membership, I think Putin thought that if he was going to "win," this military option was the only option. And the earlier the better since Biden was actually supporting Ukrainian security development.
