FIFA Suspends Russia, Ejecting It From World Cup Qualifying

Source: New York Times

World soccer’s global governing body suspended Russia and its teams from all competitions on Monday, ejecting the country from qualifying for the 2022 World Cup only weeks before it was to play for one of Europe’s final places in this year’s tournament in Qatar.

The suspension, which was announced on Monday evening in coordination with European soccer’s governing body, also barred Russian club teams from international competitions.

The decision came a day after FIFA was heavily criticized for not going far enough in punishing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, and amid mounting demands from national federations for stronger action.

russia should be excluded from all events around the world. What they were trying to do to Ukraine should be done to them.

You are absolutely right. They were going to be allowed to be in qualifying rounds just yesterday.

But often when one team refuses to play another team the team that refuses to play forfeits.

I give them no credit whatsoever they are one of the most corrupt organizations around. But even a shitty organization like FIFA can be shamed to do the right thing.

Reuters: FIFA had been criticised...after a statement that Russia could continue to play matches albeit in neutral venues and only under the name 'Football Union of Russia'.

I read something like that yesterday which also mentioned that Russia's national anthem would not be allowed to be played. Double-checked to make sure it wasn't from The Onion.

Maybe those Russian athletes will go and play for other teams. It doesn't seem fair that they should be penalized. But isn't that always the way?

BY FIFA rules once you play for a national team you are not allowed to play for another nations team. There are rules in place where you can change but I believe it involves a long time period and citizenship in the new country.

Athletes have huge soap boxes and these Russians should use them or go fuck themselves.

That is all.

They do an anti-racism take-a-knee before games.
They have players from all over Europe and the world.
It'd be a good statement of solidarity for anti war sentiment.
