Critics are blasting Robert Regan, a Republican nominee for the Michigan House of Representatives, for publicly comparing the 2020 presidential election to a rape.

"I tell my daughters, 'Well, if rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it,'" Regan joked on a Facebook livestream.

"That was a shameful comment," said Amber Harris, a Republican strategist, of Regan's rape remarks. The livestream's host, Adam de Angeli, told WXMI that Regan "misspoke," adding, "Maybe not the best analogy, but he was speaking extemporaneously."

Advocates say rape victims are often asked why they didn't "fight back" and are often blamed for their own rape because they "secretly enjoyed it."

A hardline conservative politician had been slated by his own daughter in a tweet saying: ‘pls for the love of god do not vote for my dad…tell everyone.’ Robert Regan’s daughter Stephanie has spoken out against her dad’s ambition to become a Michigan state representative on Twitter after opposing his right-wing views.

Stephanie’s tweet was widely shared online, with the college student explaining her stance in a follow-up. She wrote: ‘Do a quick fb (Facebook) or google search to find out about his campaign.

‘I don’t feel safe rn sharing further information about his beliefs, but please look him up and just read for yourself.’ Stephanie’s sister Natalie has also spoken out against her Republican dad, and urged people to vote for someone else in Michigan’s August primaries.

Regan’s campaign website boasts that he was one of the first people to come out in support of Donald Trump while the now-president was running for election. He is also pushing for English to become the ‘official language’ of Michigan, says he is strongly anti-abortion, and branded the Black Lives Matter movement ‘destructive.’
