(CNN)The US has information suggesting China has expressed some openness to providing Russia with requested military and financial assistance as part of its war on Ukraine, a Western official and a US diplomat told CNN, and is conveying what it knows to its NATO allies.
It is not yet clear whether China intends to provide Russia with that assistance, US officials familiar with the intelligence tell CNN. But during an intense, seven-hour meeting in Rome, a top aide to President Joe Biden warned his Chinese counterpart of "potential implications and consequences" for China should support for Russia be forthcoming, a senior administration official said.
The series of events underscored the growing concern among American officials at the budding partnership between Moscow and Beijing as Biden works to isolate and punish Russia for its aggression in Ukraine. While officials have said the Chinese President was alarmed at what has taken place since Russia invaded, there is little to indicate China is prepared to cut off its support entirely.
That leaves open a troubling possibility for American officials -- that China may help prolong a bloody conflict that is increasingly killing civilians, while also cementing an authoritarian alliance in direct competition with the United States.

(8,052 posts)Russia should quit, NEEDS to quit, everyone knows that--if only to save the Russian military and the Russian economy, even if China doesn't care about the suffering of the Ukrainian people. After watching this utter disaster unfold, that they are entertaining the thought of prolonging it--to what end? Sickening.

(21,126 posts)It's not like there is heavy enough of infrastructure available between the two to really skirt the sanctions meaningfully.
I wonder if Chinese tanks are as good as their drywall, toothpaste, and baby food.

(1,568 posts)Cargo trucks, fuel trucks, medical stuff. How much capabilities does Russia have for refining fuel from all their oil? Stuff like that and drones seem like easy things to provide. I can't imagine seeing Russian forces rolling around Ukraine in ZTZ-99 tanks or Z-10 helicopters.

(46,887 posts)One tank costs around $3 million.
One helicopter is $17 million.
Right, cannot see China handing those out like trick or treat candy so the Russians can get the tanks stuck in mud.
And the Z-10s shot down.
Yes it would have to be along the lines you suggest.

(13,918 posts)It seems to me the "smart" play would be to offer just enough aid to keep Putin digging his hole, while remaining below a level that would incur any significant western repercussions, then parlay that into gaining some ground when the wheels completely come off. Im sure that China's government wouldn't mind more or less directly controlling some oil fields and other infrastructure that is currently considered Russian territory.

WASHINGTON Face to face, President Joe Bidens national security adviser warned a top Chinese official on Monday about Chinas support for Russia in the Ukrainian invasion, even as the Kremlin denied reports it had requested Chinese military equipment to use in the war.
U.S. adviser Jake Sullivan and senior Chinese foreign policy adviser Yang Jiechi met in Rome, with the Biden administration increasingly concerned that China is using the Ukraine war to advance Beijings long-term interest in its competition with the United States.
Sullivan was seeking clarity on Beijings posture and was warning the Chinese anew that assistance for Russia including helping it avert sanctions imposed by the U.S. and Western allies would be costly for them.
The national security adviser and our delegation raised directly and very clearly our concerns about the PRCs support to Russia in the wake of the invasion, and the implications that any such support would have for the PRCs relationship not only with us, but for its relationships around the world, said State Department spokesman Ned Price, using the initials for the Peoples Republic of China.
