Scoop: White House considered sending Americans gas cards

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Axios

The White House considered giving Americans gas cards to help offset high prices, but faced strong opposition from congressional committees, which questioned the plan's viability and effectiveness.

Why it matters: The Biden administration is feeling political pressure from high energy costs, made worse by Western sanctions against Russia, and Democrats desperately want to offer some kind of policy response.

What we're watching: The White House this week considered having the IRS send gas cards to Americans — a short-lived idea that some key House Democrats vehemently opposed.

The idea came up as part of a broader package to address gas prices, which is still in its early stages, a senior Democratic aide told Axios.

In NYC, where most people don't own cards, they would have all ended up on Ebay.

As a way to profit. From the making of the cards, the distribution, the loading of the cards with credits and about 10,000 scams that that they would guide their cronies towards in an effort to absorb as much of that cash as possible. Then call it capitalism

But only after they went on TV and chastised the idea into oblivion. Once people saw relief from it, they would of course take credit.

..... we only traveled a total of 1300 miles total.

Covid was the main reason BUT, we live within 2 miles of all we need. Doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, restaurants, shopping, and visiting family. We planned it that way before retiring. Our kids and extended young family members need the gas money help.

Or give them to food shelves to help offset the cost of food. Or VA office in local communities for homeless vets so they can exchange them for food at food shelves.

Tax anyone who sells or buys the cards. I would say 80% of the value of the card. I'm F***ing sick of the rich getting benefits they DON'T need.

Developing fuel systems that will be useable years from now won't be seen as addressing the needs of voters today.

People want to ignore nuclear, gas & oil & focus on Solar & wind; even though much of what's needed for those products require rare earth minerals and other products controlled by china & Russia. And much of what's needed is also not reusable. Putting us under even MORE control of communists.
Right NOW high gas prices are a problem for most of the country and it needs to be addressed NOW

Maybe one day we WILL have new inventions that can drastically drop oil & gas dependence. But its not here today.

Between a Shell card I just got and shopping with gift cards from Kroger I’m saving 30¢ a gallon. Not that I use much gas - usually $30 a month when gas was $2 or $2.50.

And if I'm buying groceries, I'll buy a Kroger card and get points for both the purchase and the redemption.

Tax on the excess profits of the oil companies.

One that goes from city to city as well as a system of mass transit rails inside the cities so as to wean Americans off using gas powered vehicles.

from government issued gas cards and give them no reason to lower their prices even though the price of oil has gone down. Though the gas cards may help consumers, it would also be yet another government subsidy to oil companies who do not need it. Oil companies need to be held accountable for their price gouging.

I'm sure that production costs are up just as everything else is. But if their profit USED to be .20 a gallon (I have no idea what the real profit per gallon is) after all costs factored and now its .40 a gallon, then yeah, I want answers.

If it would have been a fixed credit you can by gas with, then how much? Or would it give a discount on all gas bough in a period?

But the reporters appear to know fuck all, so it's pretty useless.
