House votes to hold Navarro and Scavino in contempt of Congress

Source: The Hill

The House voted Wednesday to hold two advisers to former President Trump, Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino, in contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas from the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

Lawmakers voted almost entirely along party lines, 220-203.

Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), the two Republicans serving on the committee, were the only members of their party to back the resolution.

Navarro, a former trade adviser to Trump, and Scavino, Trump’s deputy chief of staff for communications, both defied the committee’s subpoenas and refused to testify or provide documents.

why the hell did they have to vote on it? If you or I didn't show up after being summoned, we'd go directly to the clink.

but almost half voted to let him go, because they were afraid of their ex-boss, who this perp was a favourite of, and who still loitered around the building yelling about how he was fired for no good reason.

That vicious, Machiavellian winning-is-the-only-thing fixation - combined with some of the most rabid bigotry and neo-fascism you might see anywhere.

Navarro's only fear seems to be that this time, he might get caught - or take the fall. But if the genteel Mr. Garland doesn't act...

Why the hell they don’t just send the Sargeant at Arms, who, presumably, is armed, go pick these motherfuckers up and throw them in the basement until they squeal or die, I’ll never understand.
DoJ, apparently, and the courts, CLEARLY, have been infiltrated by terrorist-republican sympathizers or worse and will do nothing.

Please don't ask me to explain why, I don't have a law degree & I'm not an expert in this particular legal area. Suffice it to say, I had the same questions as you so I devoted the time & effort to researching the question & came away with an understanding of why, in this particular situation (& a lot of details factor in to it), someone can't just be grabbed & thrown in jail.

I know, I know, the next time I delve into such a research project I should share my findings with all my friends here on DU! I would love to do that every time, it's just that with everything else going on in my life, & running my own business, it's a challenge.

Looks like House rules changed the procedures for arrest in 1857.
House. Rules.

If the shoe were on the other foot - if a defeated Democratic incumbent had, say, tried to self-coup his way into a 2nd term with prominent Dem lawyers and 300+ Dem lawmakers colluding in the plot (plus thousands of left-wing protesters)...

The Repug Atty. Gen. or Speaker (or RW judges) would have locked them all up and thrown away the room.

Garland will ignore it and hope we don't notice.

He needs to be replaced with someone competent. He would have made a fine SCOTUS judge, but he makes for a lousy AG.

But if Biden replaces him, it gives the other side red meat to say he's politicizing the DoJ. So it appears we are stuck with an AG who is afraid to hold seditionists and criminals at a high level accountable. He needs to be replaced but likely won't be. Maybe Biden needs to make a late-night phone call to Garland and read him the riot act. It appears he's SO AFRAID of looking political that he's letting these traitors get away with setting democracy on fire.

One set of laws for them, another set entirely for the rest of us. Can yo imagine if we, the little people, ignored subpoenas?

I really did not know that you could just ignore Congress. They hold people in contempt, issue subpoenas, and then - nothing happens. People just ignore Congress. They don't show up. They just tell Congress to cram it. I did not know you could do that. It seems you can. Now try that with a traffic ticket. They will have you in jail in no time.
