A new Fed study blows a hole in the GOP argument that unemployment benefits caused the labor shortag

shortage
A new study from the Federal Reserve published Monday tore a hole in one of the GOP's main arguments about the ongoing labor shortage.
Under President Joe Biden's stimulus law enacted in March 2021, laid-off Americans received an additional $300 a week, gig-workers were made newly eligible for checks, and the number of weeks Americans could receive unemployment was extended.
Republicans often cite the program as a reason that Americans held off from seeking jobs. But the analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco found little difference in job-seeking between states that ended their expanded unemployment programs early and those that kept them in place until their scheduled expiration in September.
"We find small differences in employer hiring activity between these two groups of states, consistent with other recent assessments of the impact of the pandemic UI expansions," the study said.

(45,534 posts)I keep jobs piled up in my basement so "real" Americans can't get to them.
Oh wait, that was the excuse all through the recession and the Trump years.
Biden's socialism is crushing the entrepreneurial spirit of America. That's why there are more small businesses in America now than before COVID https://eig.org/news/more-physical-places-of-businesses-open-now-than-pre-pandemic-led-by-sun-belt-metros
Reading the many stories online of workers leaving horrible employers is extremely satisfying. Same with the new unionization and collective bargaining efforts to get better working conditions.

(2,220 posts)Yet when we have studies and evidence, we still have to keep proving it.
I still see Putin claiming things and people willing to consider his arguments as possibly true while questioning things said by Ukrainian leaders.
Republicans have lied about everything and all of their economic lies have been proven wrong over and over. Yet their lies are still given airtime.

(26,319 posts)before the virus that people that worked in those industries were forced to work multiple part time jobs just to pay the basic everyday bills and that was before luxuries like health insurance which many could not even afford.
Then once the virus hit many retail and service businesses fired all those workers so those people had to scramble to find new jobs which many of them did with things like Uber as well as the various grocery delivery services which often pay better than their old multiple part time jobs did.
Now, those same businesses that fired them want them back since they have reopened but they want to still want to play the same old game of offering part time only with low wages and no health insurance so food service based companies like McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts and retailers like Publix and Walmart are struggling to fill spots and they will continue to struggle.
After all why quit a job you might be earning 20 bucks an hour or more to go back to working part time for an employer that has a history of screwing you over by cutting your hours to prevent you from qualifying for full time and or as a means to prevent you from qualifying for health insurance?

Republicans DON'T want to help you.
They'll be best-friends to the rich and there for the rich and the big donors, but NOT for YOU.
Republicans DON'T want to help YOU.
