Pentagon asks top 8 U.S. weapons makers to meet on Ukraine -sources

WASHINGTON, April 12 (Reuters) - The Pentagon will host leaders from the top eight U.S. weapons manufacturers on Wednesday to discuss the industry's capacity to meet Ukraine's weapons needs if the war with Russia lasts years, two people familiar with the meeting said on Tuesday.
Demand for weapons has shot up after Russia's invasion on Feb. 24 spurred U.S. and allied weapons transfers to Ukraine. Resupplying as well as planning for a longer war is expected to be discussed at the meeting, the sources told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
The Pentagon's office of Acquisition and Sustainment, the weapons buyer for the U.S. Department of Defense, will host the 90 minute meeting and Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks was expected to attend, one of the people said.

Well, I would prefer Ukraine to kick some butt and decisively win right now.

(6,991 posts)Events have shown that Ukraine will always be in danger. If she survives, she will need to become like a porcupine, covered in sharp quills that no aggressor would dare to face.

(17,583 posts)their ability to ramp up production quickly for at least the last 20 years. As soon as military production ends, if there's any unique tooling, it's disposed; same with material and spare parts. Compounding the problem have been DoD's decisions not to keep the disposed unique tooling either and the BRAC closures that eliminated many major repair depots and the ability for them to make equipment in a pinch. All this was done in the name of saving money on the backs of operations and maintenance when savings could have easily come from eliminating useless contractors, often military and civilians who "retired on Friday and returned on Monday". Can't tell you the number of these folks I met over the years who were completely unneccessary to getting the job done. Guessing us taxpayers are going to have to pay for those short-sighted decisions now.

(8,665 posts)It has been said elsewhere before and I repeat it here because it is true. The pricing and selling of military weapons is rife with corrupt practices and profiteering.

(51,551 posts)Russia is likely to regroup and try again. They're already shifting efforts east, so they might try to hold onto the eastern half of Ukraine long term.

(63 posts)and get it over with. To those who say that would start a nuclear war, that is nonsense.
Mutually Assured Destruction has prevented nuclear war since the 1950s and that is not going to change. Even if Putin was crazy enough to say pull the trigger, nobody would do it.
