Musk is a megalmaniac IMHO, and want to rule the world now that he's acquired so much wealth. He feels entitled to rule the world.
Dangerous, dangerous man.

(26,485 posts)that is feeding him this line about censorship and free speech.
Probably telling him that us rich guys got to stick together.
Saying I'd buy it myself but it would look to self serving - but if you buy it - it will be more believable coming from you. You know they're all against me.
Don't do it Elon. You know that anything TFG touches turns to poop and dies. He's conning you. You should know better.

(12,290 posts)... how such a poorly designed, disorganized piece of crap became so central to our politics. In hindsight, I guess it was bound to happen with some platform, but it's a shame that it wasn't one designed by someone smarter than Zuckerberg.

(7,604 posts)Musk is making billions with his cars. That doesn't make him a decent social engineer.
He should stop talking about social issues and stick to cars, or he'll start to lose money.
Musk is an oligarch. He says things that only make sense to oligarchs.
Trump is an oligarch, among other things. Musk and Trump have similar ideas about governance. Musk, as a politician, would be a disaster. Yet he views himself as an answer to social ills. That's guaranteed to engender tragedy.
We're seeing the development of another decline in democratic govrernance. Political discourse is losing out to wealth. Politicians are distancing themselves from the people and are listening to the money. Money is governing Washington more than ever. Musk is moving in.

(114,509 posts)and Twitter has been moderating with a very gentle hand. lowering the ban hammer only when repeated warnings haven't worked. Maybe Musk wants to expand moderation to include other languages, something that needs to happen. Dunno, in a free speech society, he needs to elucidate a bit more.
I can't see him turning it into a right wing sink, no matter what his personal politics might be. That would kill it off quickly. Wingnuts and trolls are there to pwn the libs, after all. Remove the libs and they dry up and blow away.

(15,194 posts)call to unfettered free speech. (why else are you concerned about current efforts of restraint against MTG and clear falsehood?)
Now you can be in favor of unfettered speech (and many are) - but let's not try to sell it as some appeal to 'moderation.' That ain't what he's saying.

A handful of these people are of admirable character. The large majority are not - (and a great deal of them don't even claim to be).

(18,744 posts)Remove the filters against offensiveness and wild lies and a platform becomes a lot anger, emotional fights and petty name calling. This type of activity tends to generate LOTS OF CLICKS. Clicks = $. $ = campaign contributions.
Political influence and money can enable various forms of unfair business practices. Musk is 50. He may be around for a long time.

(14,616 posts)I realized that after seeing this post comparing Trudeau with Hitler.
PM Trudeau actually allowed a loud disruptive protest including very large vehicles, honking their horns 24/7, to occupy the capital city of the country for over 3 f'n weeks. Then after the locals had had more than enough, they were asked to leave politely. Then given warning slips of paper. Then finally a very slow methodical stop and start, push forward, until finally the last of them left. No violence.
This mob of selfish antivaxers together with a rag tag tagalongs of general anti-government, anti-democratic and social media brainwashed idiots.
How many world leaders would allow freedom of expression and protest to choke their capital that long, and end it in a peaceful manner?
For that he gets the Hitler comparison? This post is where I knew Musk is not the brightest bulb. At least in any topic other than electric cars.
Justice matters.
(9,564 posts)Like in "free speech is about the government having no right to punish based on "legal" (i.g., not criminal) speech about the government"
That's it. Every other entity, be it privately owned or publicly owned (shares), has the right to ban any "speech" from anyone it doesn't want to see or hear on/inside their property (or properties).
Mike Nelson
(10,943 posts)... this is what Crooked Donald and his followers complain about... their "free speech" being curtailed. They want to get rid of, or control, social media like Twitter (plus Facebook, etc). The reason they are thrown off these sites is NOT due to free speech problems... it is due to them constantly violating the sites' "community standards." The Donald and his fans "shout fire in a crowded theater" and lie, Lie, LIE. This is what Eldon Musk wants to bring back...

(53,007 posts)If Musk did buy Twitter, which hes not gonna (hes about $40 billion too low) how long will it take someone to set up a Mastodon-based competitor? I seriously doubt legitimate news people, advertisers and Democrats will want to remain on a service thats full of the dregs of humanity.
