White House commits to barring anti-satellite missile tests
Source: AP
WASHINGTON (AP) The Biden administration announced Monday it is barring anti-satellite missile testing by the United States, a move that White House officials say is meant to underscore its hopes of establishing new norms for military action in space.
The U.S. has sharply criticized Russia and China for conducting anti-satellite missile tests, although it also used an interceptor missile fired from a U.S. Navy warship more than 14 years ago to destroy a malfunctioning spy satellite.
The issue is one thats taken on greater urgency after Russia in November launched a missile to destroy a defunct Soviet-era satellite. Vice President Kamala Harris, in a speech at Vandenberg Space Force Base on the central coast of California to highlight the administration's move, criticized the Russian action as reckless and irresponsible.
The strike created more than 1,500 pieces of space debris that increased risk to U.S. and Russian astronauts aboard the International Space Station and Chinas Tiangong space station, according to U.S. Space Command.

(15 posts)I do IT work. It is probably a lot easier and cheaper to find ways to block/destroy the terrestrial routers and fiber optics than spend a ton of money developing missiles. Also finding ways to insert viruses like Stuxnet into their systems would be very effective and a lot less expensive.

It makes perfect sense in defense too. I'm sure.

Vice President Harris on Monday announced the U.S. will avoid testing anti-satellite missiles, urging other nations to follow the lead of the Biden administration after a Russian test last November created a field of debris in space.
Harris announced the self-imposed ban on the tests, known as direct-ascent anti-satellite missile testing, during a visit to Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Administration officials expressed hope that the policy would become an international norm for other nations to abide by, calling the anti-satellite missile tests one of the most pressing threats to the security and sustainability of space.
The move comes after Harris, who chairs the National Space Council, requested the White House National Security Council in December to work with other government agencies to develop proposals for security norms in space.
The administration believes reducing the missile tests in space will reduce the risk of conflict in space and keep space clearer of debris and materials that would prohibit exploration or damage the environment.
The threat of the anti-satellite missile tests came into the spotlight last November when Russia tested a missile that struck a defunct space satellite, leaving at least 1,500 pieces of trackable space debris and hundreds of thousands of smaller pieces in its wake...........

(13,538 posts)This falls in line with the fantasy of denuclearization. Thinking countries like them will actually abide by any agreement or treaty. Ukraine is proof that they do NOT.
Just a stupid, stupid announcement to our enemies; "Go ahead & do what you want".
We're already fallen behind in other areas since the Cold War ended because we foolishly believed that meant it was really over.
