'I've Had It With This Guy': G.O.P. Leaders Privately Blasted Trump After Jan. 6

Source: New York Times

In the days after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol building, the two top Republicans in Congress, Representative Kevin McCarthy and Senator Mitch McConnell, told associates they believed President Trump was responsible for inciting the deadly riot and vowed to drive him from politics. Mr. McCarthy went so far as to say he would push Mr. Trump to resign immediately: “I’ve had it with this guy,” he told a group of Republican leaders.

But within weeks both men backed off an all-out fight with Mr. Trump because they feared retribution from him and his political movement. Their drive to act faded fast as it became clear it would mean difficult votes that would put them at odds with most of their colleagues.

“I didn’t get to be leader by voting with five people in the conference,” Mr. McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, told a friend.

The confidential expressions of outrage from Mr. McCarthy and Mr. McConnell, which have not been previously reported, illustrate the immense gulf between what Republican leaders say privately about Mr. Trump and their public deference to a man whose hold on the party has gone virtually unchallenged for half a decade.

They have lost all ability to come up with anything that solves problems or betters the country. They just want to say NO or start some off the wall bent and rant about "groomers" or other QA fear mongering BS and pass it all off as leadership and governing. And the truly sad thing is, seems like more or less 50% of the country is playing along, regularly. I used to say at any given time 33% of the electorate is off the reservation or otherwise whackadoodle. Clearly, I underestimated.

In February, Mr. McConnell voted to acquit Mr. Trump even as seven other Senate Republicans joined with Democrats to muster the largest bipartisan vote ever in favor of conviction in a presidential impeachment trial. Anxious not to be seen as surrendering to Mr. Trump, Mr. McConnell went to the Senate floor after the vote to deliver a scorching speech against the former president.

But Mr. McConnell went mostly silent about Mr. Trump after that point. He avoids reporters’ questions about the former president and only rarely speaks about Jan. 6. In a Fox News interview in late February 2021, Mr. McConnell was asked whether he would support Mr. Trump in 2024 if the former president again became the G.O.P. nominee for the presidency.

Mr. McConnell answered: “Absolutely.”

for these people? For all of five minutes! They should have "had it" with that guy many times over the four years filled with outrage after outrage. Finally, a life threatening overthrow of the government was what it took to say "enough", but these wimps couldn't even sustain that resolve. How can anyone ever trust a word they say?

McCarthy denies saying Trump should resign if impeached

A spokesman for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is denying that the leader told GOP colleagues he would recommend former President Trump resign if he was impeached over the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, one of many Trump-bashing comments from top Republicans revealed in a forthcoming book.

Top GOP leaders privately bashed Trump in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack to a further extent than previously known, according to a report in The New York Times based on the upcoming book “This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden and the Battle for America’s Future.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told advisers on Jan. 11, 2021 that “the Democrats are going to take care of the son of a bitch for us,” referring to impeachment, and also said: “If this isn’t impeachable, I don’t know what is,” according to the report.

..the so called Republican Party is no NO LONGER a political party. It's just a group of politicians with an 'R' behind their name with a single agenda to be in the majority. They are not for the country's best interests or the voters best interests. Just trying to appease a segment of the population that can't be appeased by a democracy based government.

Sure doesn’t look like it.

McConnell could have voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment. He could have used his power to get others in the GOP to do also. He did squat.

When McConnell saw the hold Trump gad on the base he fell in line with all the rest.
