Russians plunder $5M farm vehicles from Ukraine -- to find they've been remotely disabled

Source: CNN

(CNN) Russian troops in the occupied city of Melitopol have stolen all the equipment from a farm equipment dealership -- and shipped it to Chechnya, according to a Ukrainian businessman in the area.

But after a journey of more than 700 miles, the thieves were unable to use any of the equipment -- because it had been locked remotely.

Over the past few weeks there's been a growing number of reports of Russian troops stealing farm equipment, grain and even building materials - beyond widespread looting of residences. But the removal of valuable agricultural equipment from a John Deere dealership in Melitopol speaks to an increasingly organized operation, one that even uses Russian military transport as part of the heist.

Not sure how good the software locking of a piece of equipment is. Now if the application of the lock actually destroyed key parts of the machinery....

give the Russians a demonstration of how great the equipment works and tell them they should buy some...as they load up their stolen equipment and return it to the dealer.

I read this morning where they have piles of cell phones, tons of washing machines and....lots and lots of toilets.
I wonder if they know how to set up/plumb the toilets so they can use them? No toilet paper?

I was in Moscow and St. Petersburg for a few weeks. Interesting item of note, all the bathroom appliances were from different countries that had been "liberated" from the Nazis by Russia. From Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and the Baltic countries.
Thought by now they would have their own production and not dependent on the rudimentary spoils of war!

It seems like they're not aware that modern western farm equipment has computer technology, like it never even occurred to them.

The mighty Russian army is stealing to survive.

This is getting real sad. Nobody will ever “win” anything this way. Their only chance at a win would be to go home.

can't repair them without the dealer.. Same as locked phones that can't be repaired. Most new cars also. You can put the new part in but you need the dealer to "allow" the computer to recognize it.. uff.. Give me a '55 Farmall I can fix any day of the week..

GPS? I don't need no stinkin GPS...

My uncle in Wisconsin in the 70s. Was a rich farmer with German tractors even back then. He'd get off his German tractor and still wearing his Oshkosh coveralls, get into his Lincoln Continental to drive into Beloit to check his bank account.

RIP, Hoot.

“Hello John Deere? This is Ivan Semonov. I just got a new tractor and it won’t start.”

“This is a very easy fix. Take it back to where you got it.”

“And they will fix it?”

“No, they’ll put you in jail for stealing it in the first place.”
