Birx says US must prepare for summer COVID surge as immunity wanes

Deborah Birx, a leading member of the Trump administration’s White House coronavirus task force, said on Sunday the U.S. should be prepared for another potential COVID-19 surge after a recent uptick in infections in South Africa.

“They’re on an upslope again,” Birx said of South Africa’s infections on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“Each of these surges are about four to six months apart. That tells me that natural immunity wanes enough in the general population after four to six months that a significant surge is going to occur again. And this is what we have to be prepared for in this country,” she added.

Birx specifically warned Americans should be “preparing right now for a potential surge in this summer across the southern United States.”

CDC just reported 78,910 new cases yesterday bringing the current 7 day average to 56,166 a 123 percent increase from the beginning of the month when cases bottomed out at around 25,000 7 day avg.

But I'm not convinced that SA and Texas are exactly comparable.

We've had surges 6, 9, and 4 months apart. In order. With the 6 month gap being pre-vaccine and the 9 and 4 month gaps post-vaccine (and the last surge happening not long post-booster 1).

I mean, the surge last summer started at the end of July and continued for the two weeks prior to the start of school--then peaked maybe 10 days to 2 weeks after school started. "But school!" fails as an explanation; school cases were carried along by the tide that lifted all flotsam. Dead of winter matters--after that, it seems pretty random.

Plus there's immunity and there's immunity. I don't have significant levels of antibodies to measles. But I'm still immune. I thought we had that discussion 18 months ago.
