About the only thing I think would redeem our US flag would be if we added a couple stars, shaped like DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Or dropped a few stars by combining the Dakotas with Montana and Idaho, then adjusted the senate accordingly

The underlying rationale of the decision is that the City has created a public forum on its property and the speech represented by the flags is not the City's speech. And the City cannot display hostility towards religion by refusing to allow religious entities to make use of the public forum.

The City could change its policies (and probably will) to eliminate access to the flagpole by any non-governmental entity, so that it no longer is a public forum.
