I saw him "speaking" last week and he looked like he just rolled out of the gutter - very unkempt, actually looked seedy.

(13,554 posts)Sen. Rand Paul got flak Tuesday for his comments on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with some people criticizing him for echoing one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's talking points.
During an exchange with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Paul pointed out that Russia's attacks, in the recent past, have been on countries that were once part of the Soviet Union.
Putin publicly has dismissed Ukraine's right to function as a sovereign nation separate from Russia.

(13,554 posts)putin belittled them further by not even showing up.
Americans (left and right) need to wake up and quit voting for these bought and paid for politicians, lest we lose our country to the rich.
I actually have lost hope, but will keep voting and doing what I can.

he GOP lawmakers, Sen. Richard Shelby (Ala.), Steve Daines (Mont.), John Thune (S.D.), John Kennedy (La.), Jerry Moran (Kan.) and John Hoeven (N.D.), and Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), spent July 4 in Moscows U.S. Embassy, NPR reported.
I do know my Congressional Rep is Kay Granger.
When I was searching for info on the trip and found this article. I was not expecting what I read.

(2,127 posts)Every day I think less and less of the Senate as an institution that deserves any respect.
How undemocratic can it get? How non-functional? How not representative of the will of the people?
The Electoral College isn't the only thing that should be discarded.

(167,700 posts)and he was right there to "object". So now they'll have to go through the whole "regular process".
I remember the ass Tom Coburn would do that all the time - appear out of nowhere for "unanimous consent" requests - notably for funding bills, and would "object".
They used to call him "Dr. No" -
By Sarah Lueck

WASHINGTON -- On Tuesday afternoon, when most senators were preparing to leave Washington for the holiday recess, Tom Coburn was declaring his intention to stick around. "The floor's going to be open," said the 59-year-old Oklahoma Republican. "I'm going to have to be here...to try to stop stuff." Stopping stuff is Sen. Coburn's specialty. In a Congress that has had trouble passing even the simplest legislation, Sen. Coburn, who proudly wears the nickname "Dr. No,'' is a one-man gridlock machine.
This year, the senator, who indeed is a medical doctor, single-handedly blocked or slowed more than 90 bills, driving lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to distraction. He blocked a ban on genetic discrimination by health insurers. He thwarted a bill to set up a program to track patients with Lou Gehrig's disease. Also nixed: an effort to promote safe Internet use by children and a resolution to honor the late environmentalist Rachel Carson on the 100th anniversary of her birth.
A bill that would authorize government mapping of the ocean floor and coastal areas? No way. One that would require more data collection on the availability and quality of broadband service? Uh-uh. If Dr. Coburn had his way, there would be no new funding for a Justice Department office to investigate unsolved Civil Rights-era killings, no promotion of wild-land firefighter safety. Sometimes, Dr. Coburn, an obstetrician who sees patients one morning a week, disagrees with the proposals.
As a fiscal conservative, he usually objects to what he sees as excess spending. Sometimes, he just wants to force a debate or improve on items that would otherwise fly through the Senate. In a crowded legislative calendar, not everything gets the scrutiny voters might imagine. Dr. Coburn's weapon of choice is the "hold," a procedural maneuver that allows a single senator to prevent a bill from being passed quickly without a roll-call vote or floor debate. Until a rule change this year, senators could keep their holds secret, and they usually did. Dr. Coburn notifies colleagues about his intentions.

(47,940 posts)I understand a filibuster, but one asshole Senator blocking what both parties want? Can't they vote to proceed over his objections? Whatever rule he's using has to be changed.
BumRushDaShow
(167,700 posts)that when you have bills like this that have overwhelmingly passed the House and come over to the Senate and are known to be highly popular and would probably pass by a large margin in the Senate, then the Majority Leader will usually bring those types up at the end of a session before adjourning for the day, and will "ask for unanimous consent" to automatically pass "such-and-such" bill(s), and the assigned Senate Pro-temp will usually respond "without objection", UNLESS some idiot like the SPAWN OF RON PAUL "objects".
And then at that point, there is a process where said SPAWN may demand "more information" and "responses to questions" that he has and whatnot to slow it all down. Eventually when he gets his info he "releases" his hold, they will do some rudimentary debate, and will often go through the formal vote (usually a roll call when you have asses doing it to slow stuff down).
Carnival Cruz has done his share of these "holds" as well.

(1,355 posts)How can a single republican senator stop a bill or package from passing? And if they are able to do that so successfully, why didn't any of our senators stop any of Trump's horrible bills when the repukes were in power?
BumRushDaShow
(167,700 posts)and put a "hold" on it.
Democrats have done the same when the GOP was trying to ram their crap through that way - assuming they were willing to hang around and wait for the unanimous consent requests to occur - usually done before adjourning for the day.

He wiped his nose and then wiped his thumb on his lapel. Ewwww!!
I loved Schumer constantly referring to him as the "Junior Senator." And, even as much as I despise McConnell, his speech was perfectly reasonable. Both sides are wanting this aid to go through NOW. Only this tiny little child pretending to care about the country is holding things up. Paul has no concept of war or what it means to the security of Europe, and no ability to look ahead and see what it means to America. What a jerk.

(7,991 posts)And it weakens America as a result. Yes, we have many problems and biggest one right now is what happens in Urkraine and that mean they need emergency funding. That the Senate has rules that lock in minority control of that body criples our nation. That 1 man can issue a "hold" that prevent a bill from coming to the floor is assinine in the extreme. Couple that with the filibuster and the body is dysfunctional. Then, in this case, you have a politician that has received dirty, dark money from Russia which makes him compromised as a Russian asset, handing Putin a win for his investment money. Treason is not too harsh of word to describe the actions of Rand Paul here. And it is past time that Holds are eliminated in the Senate.
