It's just another day.
Update:
The latest is that it was a meeting of Asian churchgoers.
"One person was dead and five others were injured in a shooting during a meeting of Asian churchgoers in Southern California Sunday, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said."
"Police sources said the man detained is in his 60s and of Asian descent. They stressed that the investigation was in its very preliminary stages and they have not determined motive."

I think they're going to get much more than they bargained for when they get thrown into GenPop. They won't have their guns when that happens, but that's the risk you have to run sometimes...

(8,754 posts)A Taiwanese congregation was in the church at the time of the shooting, Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said. Authorities are interviewing more than 30 people who were inside the church at the time. The victims were described as mostly Asian and mostly of Taiwanese descent, authorities said.
A law enforcement source said officials believe the suspect was a 68-year-old Asian man who is originally from Las Vegas. No other details were available.
According to its website, the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church usually holds a 10 a.m. service at Geneva.

(49,001 posts)1 gives you the yum emoji (1 colon 9). (But not in title lines which get special processing).
1:9 gives you 1 colon 9. I wrote 1 colon open-sq-bracket b close open slash b close 9. That puts a non printing something in between the colon and 9.
Is your browser Firefox? Mine does that. Also double quote parenthesis gives a smiley emoji " . So I usually just put a space: " ).
Likewise you could put a space: 1: 9.

(11,986 posts)If there are 1 or 2 every day, why aren't we seeing these in the news?
If EVERY SINGLE DAY there was a front page story about "today's" mass shooting, I bet many people would start being afraid to go anywhere. Maybe reporting like that could actually prompt a much more of a public outcry of the need for stricter gun control laws. Maybe it would break down some of the resistance to gun control, and also make more people care about it who now may not give it much thought (because it "doesn't affect them" .

(11,986 posts)And I suspect that the average joe thinks this happens like maybe once a year. If it were seen as a daily occurrence, I think these people might really start to change their positions from "well, there's always going to be the occasional nutcase, we have to live with it" to "ohmigod, it's everywhere... which means it might actually happen to ME."

Almost all of the people shot this weekend were 60+. One is in his 90s. Live almost all your life peacefully only to be met with this. Cant go to the damn grocery or to church without fearing for your life.
Im done asking whats wrong with this country, because we all know what it is.

no mention of the shoot up at the Houston flea market? Did that get lost in the shuffle?)

(8,051 posts)I live in Redondo Beach which is about an hour and 15 minutes from Laguna Woods.
It is an upper middle-class retirement community. My best friend's mom lives there and she (my best friend) and her wife live in Laguna Niguel which is very close by.
Also, one of my close friends (who's half-way retired but still has a kind of online business), is getting ready to move there (Laguna Woods) in less than two weeks.
Someone else posted it may have been a relationship situation and I'm inclined to think that may be a possibility as far a motive goes. I guess we'll hear more about it as the days go by.
