US deaths from COVID hit 1 million, less than 2 1/2 years in

The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 hit 1 million on Monday, a once-unimaginable figure that only hints at the multitudes of loved ones and friends staggered by grief and frustration.
The confirmed number of dead is equivalent to a 9/11 attack every day for 336 days. It is roughly equal to how many Americans died in the Civil War and World War II combined. Its as if Boston and Pittsburgh were wiped out.
It is hard to imagine a million people plucked from this earth, said Jennifer Nuzzo, who leads a new pandemic center at the Brown University School of Public Health in Providence, Rhode Island. Its still happening and we are letting it happen.
Some of those left behind say they cannot return to normal. They replay their loved ones voicemail messages. Or watch old videos to see them dance. When other people say they are done with the virus, they bristle with anger or ache in silence.

(23,297 posts)Remember that one? I had a guy I've known for 45 years tell me in the beginning "I have documents that prove the virus was patented in the UK". Like that means something. Now he says the vaccine "has AIDS and cancer in it." It's a death cult.

(21,670 posts)When you look at the number of deaths from all causes over the past four years:
2018: 2,839,000
2019: 2,855,000
2020: 3,390,000
2021: 3,418,000
And when you extrapolate from the 2019 figure, using a 1.63% avg. annual increase:
2020: 2,901,000
2021: 2,949,000
You get 958,000 excess deaths for 2020-21 alone. Add to that the 175,000 registered Covid deaths so far in '22, and you'd get 1,133,000 likely Covid deaths.
I should note that the entire discrepancy (around 133,000) is from 2020.
Wonder why?

(2,541 posts)Americans dead several weeks ago. Probably longer ago then that given the under reporting of cases.

(7,921 posts)They chose to assign death as due to other causes like lung or heart or other organ failure, rather than admit the real agent of death was COVID. Florida is the most egregious example but far from the only one.
I haven't seen a specific likely number discussed but estimates run from 200,000 to 500,000 COVID related deaths went unreported as such.
This is to say nothing about the number who will yet die in future due to complications or organ damage due to COVID infection, or due to Long-COVID effects.
Another un-reported class is those who succumbed to stress, or will yet, while caring for COVID patients, either professionally or as family care givers.
All of the Deniers have quite a lot to answer for. TFG and his family of profiteers especially.
...And the good news is we only have 2 more years of this to go...Or do we?
